Hi- I am getting really frustrated with my clear glaze. It is coming out of
the cone 6 firing with what look like feldspar white tiny crystals or lumps
on the flat surfaces. We are firing electric with Standard #365 ,^6,
porcelain in our L & L electric kilns. I have been using the 5X20 clear
glaze tweaked a little to fit the clay body. We just found out that the clay
bodycontains Neph Syn. to lower the firing temp of the Grolleg. Could I be
having a reaction between the Neph Syn & the Potash spar?? I have tried down
firing, holding at temp, ball milling the glaze, sieving with 100 mesh
screens, spraying the glaze on....All for naught as the specks/crystals keep
appearing. Any hints or suggestions would be really helpful! Thanks-Kathy

Try speeding the cooling cycle a little. A slow cooling promotes crystal
growth (something I promote by downfiring the kiln), your kilns cooling rate
can be varied by pulling out the top spy plug (and perhaps the bottom) at
the end of the firing. This will speed up the cooling a lot giving you a
glossy glaze. When I do this I normally put the plug back in after 1700 to
slow things back down to the end.
