blue chinese decals

updated sat 28 jun 08

Digital Studio on wed 25 jun 08

Today I had this random idea to find some blue Jingdezhen type decals
for a piece that I am making... and after Googling for over an hour and
Ebaying and everything I can think of... I couldn't find anything
besides cutesy china paint kittens and puppies.
I'm not really that interested in buying an underglaze to make them
myself or using a printer and toner. Does anyone know of anywhere online
to get these? I'm mainly looking for fish and Chinese characters. I
bisque fire to cone 08 and glaze to cone 6, so would these transfers
even work with my firings or burn off in the bisque?

Kendra, first thing you need to do is read some
instruction on firing decals. They are usualy applied to
a fired glazed piece and then fired again very low to set the decal.

You will find some at the bottom of this tool page from Chinese Clayart CO

Have fun,

I took a look here:
http://www.chineseclayart.com/mall/c110/s25729/search.asp?k=decal
I don't think they had what you are looking for, but they might be able to
point you in the right direction.

OK One more time with the decals. My curiosity got the best of
me and I Googled this up;

Nice stuff, you probably have to order from China but I've found
that it is a very simple thing to do anymore. Maybe get a group order
together.

Well I thought I knew something about decals but I find
that the ones your talking about are very different.
Thanks to Terrance who sent me this nice heads up;

"The blue and white decals of Jingdezhen are often applied on greenware
and then colored in glazed, then fired."

I should have paid more attention to Tony's China blog entries about them.

So Kendra, how about letting us know what you find out about them?

Hello Angela and friends;

That's how I silkscreen all my transfer. I transfer printed tissue (and moi=
st sponge) on greenware and bisque, then I glaze and fire to cone 8/9. I ca=
n fire to any cone and use any colors that I want because it's underglaze. =
I wouldn't call it decal. You have to reconstitute the dried pigment and ap=
ply the artwork at the same time. It moves a bit in the glaze naturally. Th=
e pigments in decals do not move as third firing onglaze in low temperature=
.

When I was at NCECA, I saw that Sanbao was selling it and I was very excite=
d because I confirmed that it's a Chinese method (I learned from a Japanese=
potter) I asked the lady what they use as a medium and she wouldn't tell m=
e. She probably didn't know. But I was going to tell her mine! It was stran=
ge in NCECA because all the venders were just interested in vending and not=
information exchange. The booth fee must have been expensive.

If any clayarters have silkscreen set up and want to try this. I can send y=
ou some of the medium. It's just toasted and grinded up herbal root. Just s=
end me some stamps to cover postage.

Please look up my shop 'mayluk' in etsy and you'll see how I use this 'deca=
l.'

For real decals, $25 - $45 will get you a 11 x 15.5" custom digital decal a=

The Chinese clayart guy is Guangzhen "Po" Zhou, born in Shanghai
China in 1953, is a ceramic artist and writer, director of the
Chinese Ceramic Art Council, USA, owner of the Clayground, a ceramic
school in San Jose, California, and special reporter of "Ceramic Art"
magazine in Taiwan.
Might be a good person for Drake to check in with, as well. He's
really nice. I've met him at ACGA fairs.

Kendra
Check with a ceramic (or other) supplier for Japanese tissue transfers.
Good for application to raw clay, leather hard, biscuit or glazed
surfaces. Colours are black, blue or red. Some of the patterns may suit
your purpose. Press on the surface of the pot, wipe with a moist brush.
I use the 'black spiral' with shino glaze. If you have no success get
back to me.

Hi Friends:
I can chime in here on the Chinese decals.
I was in Jingdezhen in Feb-Mar this year and visited all the decal shops
with Wendy Li (SanBao).
There are 2 kinds of overglaze decals.
- The ones with yellow backing film work great.
cut out image, dip in H2O, slide off paper and onto glazed surface,
squeegee, let dry, fire 019-017
I even refired a piece with one already fired on to cone 05 and it still
looked good, the orange turned a nice yellow.
- The ones with the clear decal film are trickier.
The factory said to apply with a mix of camphor oil 5 ml, alcohal 4 oz,
to 1 quart of H2O.
They even gave me a soft rubber squeegee and a demonstration.
So far these are burning out for me. Po, at Chinese clayart, gives a
recipe of just using alcohal and H2O.
I'll try that next. Any info on application success with these types of
decal would be appreciated.
I also visited a blue underglaze decal shop. Those are hand squeegeed
through a metal stencil on a tissue paper
and applied to greenware.

I haven't written much lately but enjoy reading every morning with my
coffee.
I'm very busy with the Vail Farmer's Market and Art Show every Sunday in
Vail, Colorado.
So far, so good, sales surpassing last year. I just did an interview on the
local TV station this a.m.
about it. That's hard to do for "shy people" (where are those powdermilk
biscuits when you need them?)
but you just can't pass up that kind of exposure and the chance to talk
about ceramics.

Good luck to everyone with the summer shows,
