i found this very nice site:
http://tikifocus.com/
they sell bamboo poles and planks.
very cost effective.
and a very easy website to order from/navigate.
i am making bamboo dippers for tea ceremony.
(don't ask me why...? i know they are for sale
for 6 bucks each...but, i just want to make my own.)
with bamboo pin nails.
at my show `50 years of mel` i am going to have
a case with my best tea bowls, a few water pots, and
i am making all the bamboo tea ceremony tools...except
the wisks.
i use bamboo dippers in the studio for glaze...and
need to make some new ones. (the ones i brought from
japan are used up and gone.)
i ordered a 10 foot 3 inch pole
a 10 foot 2 inch pole and an 8 foot plank four inches wide.
all the bamboo i will need. dimensions perfect.
and the cost was 35 bucks..shipping included.
nice.
remember, we who live on the canadian border do
not have access to bamboo.

Mel,
Are you sure about your order? I checked the site and the price for your ten foot, 2 and 3" poles came to $28, not counting shipping. I couldn't find the 4" plank. I'm assuming you mean the flattish (slightly curved pieces), which are in the $6-7 range or thereabouts. So if you bought one of those for, say $7, then your order would only be $35, not counting shipping. Plus, they clearly state that there's an extra $20 charge for orders under $50.
I loved my bamboo dippers, which I also bought in Japan in the early 80's, but they long ago cracked and had to be discarded. Maybe if I kept them in water like the cows tongue (forget the Japanese name) throwing tools, they wouldn't have cracked.
Last month I bought a live black bamboo plant which is currently living in a large planter until I can figure out where I want to plant next spring. It's a spreading type so I'm going to have to be careful where I locate it or otherwise dig in some serious bamboo barrier around the perimeter.
There's at least one timber bamboo strain that will grow in my zone but the suppliers were out for this season, so next spring I'll get one of those as well.
I planted two different timber bamboos in Florida as well as black, golden and a bushy type whose name I can't remember. In a couple of years those timber bamboos were 75 and 100 feet tall! You really can just about watch that stuff grow!
I cut off one short piece from one of them when we moved, so I'd have it for making more tools when my current ones wore out.
Regards,
June
