Check out the work of Shimizu Uichi the late Japanese National Treasure.
He worked with Iron glazes and layered other glazes over the top of the iron
glaze. He was able to get incredibly thick glazes to stay on top of his
iron glazes.
I was lucky enough to see about a dozen of his pieces in Tokyo the last time
I was there.

Perhaps you will agree that he took layering to the extreme.
