Nick,

Many ideas out there for making your own banding wheel. I blogged a
try awhile back on wirerabbitpots. I use it but it does have a bit of
slop to it (wiggle). I wouldn't use it for really smooth banding of
pots, but it works great for holding my monster hump mold for spanking
bowls. More of a turntable I guess. It lives permanently attached to
my workbench. Here is the blog post in its own web page:

If you can find an old ceiling fan you just might be able to make a
smoother banding wheel with that. I've two old ones I may try that
with in the future.

I must say that I do love my shimpo banding wheel I purchased. It is
fantastic for waxing bottoms of bowls, mugs, etc. Smooth and turns for
a long time.

My best Banding Wheel I made from the bearing post or column from a stand-alone Spin Dryer, very free-running and very strong. Description with picture available if needed, please write to me OFF LIST!

Hi there!

I recently graduated from college, found an apprenticeship for a stone
sculptor, and moved all of my studio equipment (wheel, wedging table, damp
box, etc.) into the studio I'll be working out of for the next year or so.
Hooray!

And now I'm looking for some plans for a DIY banding wheel and extruder! I
believe I saw a link off of somebody's e-mail a few weeks ago for the DIY
banding wheel. However, when I went back to look for it, I had no luck. As
for the DIY extruder, I haven't seen any plans, but I'm hoping someone
out
there may have. ...either that or knows where I can buy a cheap one.

Thank you,
Nick

Nick:
See the extruder book on sale at Potters Council website for details on
making an extruder.

A banding wheel can be made from anything that will turn and is on a
pedestal. I have one made from iron pipe fittings. I have seen photos of
one made from a car wheel. Many of the online ceramic supply houses have
lazysusan types that are quite inexpensive.
