replacement "fire ring" west coast updraft..suggestions

updated sun 20 jul 08

We recently acquired a used 48 cubic foot west coast updraft kiln here =
at SFCC. As you folks may know this kiln has 16 burners and a single =
pilot light that lights a fire ring which in turn will light the =
burners. The ring is then shut off during the duration of the firing, =
which literally leaves all of the burners without any safety shutoff =
should one or more burners blow out.=20

We aren't comfortable with the current configuration and are considering =
solutions, and I am looking for any logical and simple solutions that =
the group may have. I know that the Geils have a fire ring that is =
stainless steel and stays lit throughout the firing, which would be much =
safer. I would like to avoid using an individual pilot assembly for each =
burner if at all possible.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Craig...

I say this with a disclaimer from h*ll=2C but once you are past 1004 degree=
s F=2C the pilot flame becomes irrelevant anyway=2C as this is the auto-ign=
ition temperature of natural gas. For example=2C in an Abernathy-style kil=
n there is not even a pilot system for the main burners. They are simply t=
urned on once the little atmospheric "pre-burners" have brought the kiln to=
dark red heat=2C which is a bit past 1004. From that point on=2C the syst=
em is automatically self-sustaining. I expect to get flamed for saying thi=
s (no pun intended)=2C but "facts is facts". (And yes=2C Abernathy kilns p=
ass safety inspections=2C at least on combustion issues. The no-chimney th=
ing is another matter!) Consult a combustion engineer (which I am certainl=
y NOT). Your kiln passed inspection when it was designed and built=2C so I=
would guess it is kosher the way it is.

This is typical of factory made kilns in Japan. Except instead of
the ring, you light the multiple burners with a wand torch. They
have no baso valves or pilots.

It seems like multiple burners pointing up act as their own
pilots. And as James mentions, after a certain temp., they are self
re-lighting.
