crazing hazards. verification? litigious concerns

Hi all=2C I am coming in late on this current round of crazing posts=2C I=
see repeats and new points also. Things to take to heart. In my view the=
re is no reason to accept crazing unless it is a deliberate aesthetic (crac=
kle) choice. On service ware it is more of a technical concern than a san=
itary one in my opinion. (witness 6 billion living humans who were once ba=
bies who crawled around sticking everything their grubby paws could grasp i=
nto their mouths and I rest my argument regarding sanitation and immunity b=
uilding.)
=20
A More pressing issue is what we tell=2C say and print as saftey assurances=
to the buying public in our ever more fear driven and litigious world soci=
ety. Folks ask if my work is dishwasher and microwave safe=2C and I say 'w=
ell I do=2C but if you really wish to use and cherish this piece for a real=
ly long time=2C hand washing should be part of that ritual' and 'some potte=
ry glazes do tend to heat up in the microwave so I am always careful if I m=
icrowave'. Haven't lost any sales over this and I have made no claim someo=
ne can use against me.
=20
Same with other claims re toxicity. "No lead used" Simple and truthful. =
and as already mentioned in another post=2C folks are there and buying for=
the art experience=2C let's not bog down and kill that sense of wonder wi=
th unecessesary technical discussions about issues popular opinion swings a=
nd sways with each decade based on "latest" scientific thought as to what a=
nd at what level toxicity becomes dangerous.
=20
A few short years ago copper would "kill us dead for sure" and now many rus=
h to add copper and silver for sanitation of stored foods. I don't put ba=
rium or copper in food contact liner glazes=2C and if someone wishes to lic=
k my copper saturated Oribe green cone 12 wood fired exterior glaze untill =
a toxic level is ingested that person has other more pressing problems over=
which I have no control. my point is I never told or inferred it was saf=
e to do anything or whatever.
=20
Let's use stable glazes or get out of the business. And continue to educate=
ourselves proven fact on the oxides where food is concerned.
Eat the best healthy food one can find=2C
Drink the finest wine one can afford=2C and
Make love to someone special often.

Lee=2C Yes=2C I should not have used copper and barium in the same sentenc=
e.
=20
No=2C i do not consider copper and barium of equal hazard. I have a conc=
ern with copper saturation in a glaze possibly making the glaze and it's ot=
her constituents unstable. I am aware of the research that supports our fo=
refathers knowledge re the health benefits of copper in daily use. =20
I have not used Barium at all since some glaze tests in 1981 and do not con=
sider it and copper in the same league re toxic and hazard concerns.=20
=20
My intended point=2C which regrettably I digressed from=2C was not to make=
claims we can be later held accountable for as popular knowledge shifts an=
d spins.=20

barium at all. I primarily use copper for trailingdecoration=2C similar to=
traditional use in Mashiko. Not as a baseglaze.Do you believe barium and c=
opper are of equal hazard? In the past=2Cthe primary issue with copper was =
in lead glazes=2C where copper wouldallow lead to leach more easily. Edouar=
d recognizes this in hiswriteup. When people mention them in the same senten=
ce=2C they are led tobelieve they are equally hazardous. Copper is closer t=
o iron thanbarium in toxicity in glazes.=20
