Dear Mel: I'm just back on and admit to not following Clayart for some
time. I'm a bit confused why you fire the hell outta copper red to
Cone 12. What benefit does firing it that high have? I always
understood that the development of the red happened on the way down
and don't see the benefit of the high fire.
As you get more macho I seem to be getting to be more of a whoosie. I
just discovered in our last reduction cool wood firing that the really
great colours where in the pots that were fired in the Cone 6-Cone 8
area. My sidekick Heidi is just cooling a wood firing at USU where she
tried to fire the entire kiln between 6 and 8 but got the front hot
and the back is at 6. We had three discoveries in our last firing.
Cone 6 had the best colour from our high iron clay body, the longer
you hold a kiln at high temp, the longer it takes ya to cool it in
reduction-daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah and we soaked our wood for reduction cool
in water and there was very little clean up of the work at the end of
the firing- dry cleaning?????????????????? Mel, USU is a research
institute and I'm thrilled to be doing research there. What other
school suggests that you list how you fired the pot and how you cooled
it???
Good to see you're out there giving it berries.
Best,
Tony

the only pic i took is on my blog The Wood Pile Slum. It looks
dangerously close to the dreaded raku. This piece was fired on it's
side and pancaked a bit but I would love to achieve these kinds of
colours thru out the kiln. If Heidi posts some pics to me I'll post
them to my blog.
Best,
tony

Dear Jon Byler,
For a very full discussion of the attributes of Copper compounds in
Glasses your best source of information is :
W. A. Weyl, "Coloured Glasses". 1951. ISBN 0-900682-06-X. This book is
still in print. It should be in your University Library.
Might make good reading for Mel and Tony C as well.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.

Parts get pretty hot. I think that pot was in the firebox and got
covered with ash. Craig is on the list, maybe he will chime in.
