"s" cracking problem

Judy,

You might be getting "S" cracks right now because it is summer and
things are drying much faster. My "theory" of "S" cracks is what
happens when the rim of the piece drys faster than the bottom. So ...
I always turn my bowls upside down to dry as soon as the rim is
leatherhard enough to hold the weight. Then the bottom of the bowl
dries first, and the rim dries last. That's what I want.

Another option that I use for BIG bowls and platters that are more
difficult to flip over ....... is to wrap the rim in plastic, but
leave the middle open to drying. Dry cleaner bags are my solution for
this. At first, just a small circle in the middle of the platter is
allowed to start drying. As it dries, I open the hole in the plastic
so a larger cirlce in the middle of the platter gets air ..... I keep
the rim covered until the entire flat part of the platter is dry,
then I take off the plastic and let the rim dry last. Voila ... no
"S" cracks.
