Many thanks to everyone who responded to my plea to find the
recipe or something similar to a mystery glaze I was given and loved.
I got lots of help from some wonderful Clayarters and have
finished my first round of testing.
Several thought the glaze looked like a commercial one from=20
Minnesota Clay, HG5 Iron. I ordered it and the test tile does indeed =
look
very similar and will be a good substitute. =20
Some other suggestions were; =20
(I had on hand a supply of the Special RIO from CeramicSupply and used =
it
in all tests)
1. Randys Red,=20
I had not tried it before because of the many comments
in the archives about problems with this glaze.
My tests of Randy's were very nice and did look like the mystery =
glaze,
so another possible substitute.
2. Jan's Red:
another glaze along the same lines that I had not seen before
and is promising. I really like the way it goes golden where =
thickest.
3. Plum:
A gorgeous glaze with nice purple cast.
You can see the tests on my Flicker page,=20

I've posted the recipes there also, sorry the photos do not do the =
glazes justice.
I did not fire down to try to slow the cooling but
allowed the kiln to cool naturally. I do have ceramic fiber covering =
the bottom of the
kiln and as a gasket between brick layers which helps slow the cooling a =
bit. Cone 6
I really appreciate everyones effort, I learned about some new glazes. =
Each one I mixed
is a keeper. I still need to try the Tomato Red too.
