Re vent plans...........

One inch is more than enough.... I used 1/2 inch fiber...soft blanket..... not hard board......but that can work too....the vent temp is not so high...remember than the damper will push the heat to a direction where the damper tells the flame to go.....understand? it will follow the flame to the right...if the damper pushes it that way..... Gluing is simple with sodium silicate....and buttons made by yourself...or buttons made by manufacturer can also work... Many available for cheap prices...... They just need to do the fastening work...the mechanical connection. Not difficult. Fiber is thermally opaque....Like the tiles on the space ships....for which it was origianly developed.....no temp transfer from hot to cold surface....you can put your hand on the cold side...and not feel more heat than a coffee cup... Your wooden structure temp. should be low....I put an oven thermometer there at the hottest area and read it for the first few fires ....no problems with heat enough to cause wood to burn...or char. Remember...from the 'movie'.....Paper burns at 451 degrees F. ( movie title: "Fahrenheit 451" ) Great flick..... The skill of the tinner...the metal worker is important.....seams than do not leak....sealed with fiber.....adhered with sodium silicate and attached with pins and washers made of porcelain......good mechanical connection....wire? no. Stack sounds ok...12 inch is good... Mine was 12 inch dia....for 24 cubic foot olsen updraft...used double thickness ss stack material ....through the roof....like for a fireplace.....maybe you should have 18 inch flue?....but maybe that is overkill? Wire will not last like buttons and washers..... Ward knows his burners....maybe not so much about ventilation? be safe. Observe the first few firings very carefully. Make notes....measure the sxhaust temp with oven thermometers.....'know thine enemy'. OK? ric "...then fiery expedition be my wing, ..." -Wm. Shakespeare, RICHARD III, Act IV Scene III Richard H. Ric,

You have made my life so much easier with your vent solution, thank you. It is in the works but I do have a couple of other questions. I spoke with Marc Ward about the insulation for the vent and he has 1" blanket rated to 2300 that has to be glued in and buttoned with high temp wire. To your knowledge, is there a material in board form that would do the trick? Also, my kiln is 48 cu ft and is a 12 inch stack sufficient? or should it be bigger? The kiln is forced air cone 10.

Thanks.
Candace
