Hi Angela,
I've been following your posts about iron red tests too. Just want to say
that in my experience the dark blue happens where thin, and I'm using
Touchtone (Touchstone) using Kingman feldspar, no Neph Sy. I have sometimes
purposely had a thin layer of glaze on the outside of bowls for a navy
color, and thicker on the inside to get the red effect. And then sometimes
the gods don't smile and you get "muck green".
If you have time to look, there are some red pots in my blog
There is an index on the right...click on
Pottery-Stoneware and then scroll down to December of 2007 to see some of my
more successful results.
I'm convinced that thickness of glaze and rate of cooling really make a
difference in this glaze. Also, a few times I have fired it too hot and it
turned brown.
good firings!

Subject: Interesting iron glaze test results.
In my quest for a mystery iron red glaze
Timothy Joko-Veltman told me the dark blue/black
where thin might mean there was neph sy in the recipe.
I had not tested Touchstone (revised Randy's Red) yet so I mixed
it up this week and substituted neph sy for the G200.
I dipped one test tile before adding 5% bone ash, the photo is on
my Flickr site:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/7457150@N05/
I think the application is a little thin on the first tile, it might have
been redder. But the second tile (with bone ash) is amazing.
Here is the recipe as I mixed it, cone 6 ox, no controlled cooling.
Nyph sy 196.1
Gerst Borate 313.7
EPK 49
Talc 147.1
Silica 294.1
total 1000
Special RIO 147.1 (from Ceramic Supply, NJ)
bone ash 50
I also mixed up 2 different Tomato reds, but had un-exciting results.
I want to thank everyone for their help in my search, I have a whole stable
of great iron glazes now.

Did Ceramic Supply, NJ give you the formula for "Special RIO"?
Pass it along if you will.

Well Miles, someone on the list might know exactly what it is
but the best thing is to call Ceramic Supply and order some.
I don't think it is something we can make.
a link to their site:
http://www.7ceramic.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=IRONSPEC&Category_Code=CHEM_100
5# was $13.50
After reading about the success it gave in achieving a nice red I
decided to give it a try. It is a really bright red in the bag. You won't
mistake
it for your normal supply of RIO. It does give nice results.

I study the chemistry of glaze in order to understand my personal synergy in
life.
Making something pre-determined is beyond my intent.
One understands imperfectly if the ingredients are a reportorial unknown.
Most of my difficulties have come from the necessary invented place-holders
in my math-thought for the "unexamined life".
If you are giving a dinner party and one of your invited guest is
bringing a mystery partner you will not know how to entertain the mix of
personalities.
After the fact, of coarse, you will know, something about parties with
the mystery guest present but questions about who you are or do are not with
out domain from what your presence does to the other guests, mystery
identity included.
I think amounts of our minerals are less important to the matrices of a
glaze molecule than the bonded identity of the mineral I am adding: so I
don't want to add material with out formula.
Do you have a contact address or phone number for Ceramic Supply, NJ?
