Hey Claybuds,
I just decided to use my AMEX pts from years of business expenses to get
tickets to Costa Rica in January. (before they decide to eat up my points and
they disappear)

Any ideas for places to visit, potters, clay adventures, would be most
appreciated.

Thanks!

Susan --

Go to the Poas volcano -- it's near the capitol
(where you're almost certain to be flying in
anyway), and it's like visiting the moon or
something -- totally different experience.

There used to be a few companies where you
could rent bikes, and they'd tote you and
the bikes up the hill and drop you off at
the volcano. Naturally it's pretty much
all downhill as you return to San Jose.
I'm sure you can find a nice lunch/break
in Heredia (lovely little city, one of the
universities is there).

From the gap at Monte Verde on a very good
day you can see either the Atlantic or
Pacific, depending on which direction
you're looking. The trip is nice. Lots
of intersting birds/butterflies, etc.

If you're there during concert season,
the symphony is much better than you might
expect, and the Teatro Nacional is worth
a half-hour of touring, which fits in well
with a concert.

There's lots of good stuf at the Gold
Museum. The National Museum is quirky,
but extremely pleasant.

For beaches I'd recommend the Pacific side
down towards Panama. I found less undetow
there than in Liberia (Pacific north). There're
far more mosquitos on the Carribean coast.

Many tour touts will try to get you to go
to folk dance events. Please remember that
one most important principle of travel --
"Each nation's folk dance is exactly as
boring as every other nation's folk dance."

Best wishes -- Steve Slatin
