Hi all,I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with Equisetum
(horsetail) ash? It is VERY high in silica. It is also a very prolific
plant in the right place. I'm thinking n terms of shino but if you have any
other suggestions I'd surely like to hear.

Well, for shinos you need lots of alumina and less than normal
silica, so I doubt Horsetail will be much help. My shino has 1.57
moles alumina to 5.18 silica, for instance.

Seems rather than a shino, this plant would lend itself to something
like a Hagi white, Mashiko Nuka, etc... since it is probably a good sub
(silica-wise) for rice straw ash.
Try 5 parts rice hull (horsetail) ash, 4 parts wood ash, and 3 parts
feldspar. It will give you a good starting point.

I know the plant. It's other common name is scouring rush as the early settlers used it as a natural steel wool pot cleaner. We have lots where I live so let me know what you learn. Kim H.
