cleaning advancers

I just completed my first glaze firing in my new L&L kiln on Advancer shelves. It was a great success. I have a drip or two glaze drips on the shelves. Question: Do I use a paint scraper to clean them off or ?????

Thanks

Hey Shula.....

With my advancers I use a fettling knife to
"pop" off the glaze drips.. I've never had to dig
down under the drip....... just
a little leverage does the trick. At least that's my
experience. They do seem to come off very easily..... so far.

Occasionally a bit of color from the glaze clings to the
Advancer .... more like a slightly faded spot rather than a drip. This
"fade" has always fired out in the next firing. I'm aware it's
probably a big "no-no" but I just arrange the new pots around
the faded spot. Come to think of it, this has only happened
once and the next firing was a shino to at least ^11. Maybe
the higher temp made a difference???........

Whatever, I thoroughly appreciate my advancers.

Take care. Glad you're getting some time to pot and fire.

The Advancers are great shelves, but the need care as they are fragile.
I sprinkle an extremely thin layer of Kyanite(Mullite) crystals under he
post and on top of the post, so the shelves don't ever stick from the
pressure of other layers of shelves and pots. I use hot wax on the feet
of porcelain and push the waxed foot into a very thin layer of Kyanite.
The Kyanite sticks to the wax. The Kyanite can be brushed off after
firing and you can use it again. I also sometimes sprinkle Kyanite on
the shelf and drag a tool across the shelf to get a thin layer and just
simply set the pot on the shelf. I always apply the Kyanite on the
shelf outside the kiln. I take any Kyanite off the shelf on the outside
inch so none of the Kyanite can fall on the lower layers of pots. The
Kyanite may be used again.

My friend Sam said that Advances can not be allowed to get wet. If there is
water moister in the shelf it will explode.

Is that true?

Essentially yes, if they get wet and are not dried out properly, they will
explode.

Here are some links to PDF's of articles about Advancer shelves:

I have Advancer shelves at school and in my studio.
The ones at school are in an unconditioned shed.
They have gotten wet from condensation.
I towel dried them then loaded and fired them with no problems.

Let me know if you have more questions about Advancer shelves.
