mold in my drying cabinets

I lived in Mendocino , on the edge of the world, for 30 years and
OFTEN had black mold on my clay. It doesn't do anything! It May make
the clay more plastic, but it burns out. (it rains so much in Mendo
that there're many molds and some seem baaaaad, but this black stuff
on clay never bothered me, and I breathe every day.
Onwards and upwards! (in mendo they say that, and then: THROUGH THE
FOG!)

Hi Melissa,

"Oxine"...

You can 'google' it...

Various kinds - 'Oxine AH', 'Oxine FP', etc

Mix with Water...in a regular Spray Bottle...'mist' the Cabinet interiors...

Works great...no odor...safer than regular Bleach.

Great for lots of things...

Molds are everywhere in wet clay. You
can hardly prevent them being there. They
are bound to inhabit your drying cabinet,
since the wet clay goes in, and the atmosphere
is chronically moist. You can periodically
spray with a solution of household bleach.
It will kill the mold, but more will enter, so
it is an ongoing process. You can inhibit
the mold growth to some degree by leaving
the door(s) open on your drying cabinet when
there's nothing in there drying.

Dear Karin;

I sell through the Stewart-Kummer Gallery in Gualala just down the
road, and that mantra is literally true. In the town of Gualala, it
is frequently socked in; and a short drive up the Old Stage road
brings one to the gallery at 1000' elevation and sunny rolling hills
sparsely covered with grand oak trees and meadows. To make that drive
through and out of the Fog makes arriving at the gallery like finding
ShangiLa.

I bought the big steel framed shelves at the Depot that come with
particle board shelves. To make a damp box I wrapped one set of
shelves with heavy plastic. I had the most beautiful green 'fuzz'
grow on those shelves in a couple of months. Ended up replacing them
with white laminate shelves. Have not had the problem since. Are
your shelves particle board?

Yes, there are so many truly beautiful places there; go around a
curve and a whole new Japanese landscape appears--for and all! It is
incredibly special, both north and south of Mendo itself, and the
Montgomery woods, half an hours' drive inland from Mendo, is a mile
and a half walk-thru that when you take the left trail ( it loops
around on two levels so you get two views) you find yourself in a
redwood forest SO immense that you literally feel like a hobbit.
But I needed summer. and the fall in Nevada City has, each year,
galvanised me into making fall pots -- and have I ranted about the
South Yuba River ?
SO, Japanese landscape, or turning colors, we live on such a
beautiful planet!
Shangri la is everywhere, hiding out for us to find.
Onwards and upwards,
Karin

Melissa...

We live in a log home=2C and were getting some of that black mildew on some=
of the logs. When we restained some of the walls we added Zinsser Add-2 M=
ildewcide to the stain. Two years now=2C and thus far the mildew has not r=
eturned. The Add-2 comes in a little inexpensive packet that you mix into =
any paint or stain=2C then coat as usual. It kills molds and fungi. We fo=
und it at Menards=2C but it is probably available at any better paint store=
. You can read about it here: http://www.zinsser.com/product_detail.asp?P=
roductId=3D34

Good luck with whatever you try.

I have experienced places as powerful but quite different near Big
Sur. When I was a very young potter(1963), I took my pots and a wheel
up to Nepenthe and Rafe(the owners' son) would sell the pots while I
demoed on the wheel. They put me up in a Stuga(cabin 8x10 with water
in a jug and a pot to P in) on Partington's Ridge..... I could hear
the sea lions all night long. Those were the days.......

When I had a summer job at an insect museum, we used to use a small block of
camphor in our insect jars to prevent mold. We stored dead insects in them
prior to them being mounted for display in the museum cases. I too am
getting mould in my fridge that I use as a damp cupboard so will try this -
as it smells nice - seems to be non-toxic as it is used in cooking in India.
Other uses according to wikipedia are antibacterial (though does not say
anti fungal) and as an embalming fluid - so it's defintely killing stuff and
so worth a try.

I seem to recall a discussion elsewhere about mercury as a fungicide in
paint. A person with hypersensitivity to mercury was in a room painted with
"outside" paint. There were really bad effects, and the cause was difficult
to discover. The root of the problem was a fungicide in the outdoor latex
paint, much higher concentration and with mercury.

Whatever you try, be careful about the active ingredient. The drying cabinet
should have a relatively small surface and the release through closed doors
may not be significant. Since you are not going to have your head in there
all the time, it should be less of an issue.

AS everyone says, good luck with that.

Good advice in general=2C but Add-2 is made for both indoor and outdoor use=
in paint=2C stain=2C and wall paper adhesive. It contains no mercury=2C n=
or anything else particularly nasty. It's active ingredient is a tasty coc=
ktail called 2-(4-Thiazolyl)Benzimidazole. According to the MSDS (http://w=
ww.zinsser.com/pdf/MSDS/add2msds_2004_10.pdf)=2C it is not harmful if swall=
owed or inhaled unless you are a fish.

Be well.
