tony: teaching philosophy

well, this is my take always:

all teaching starts with trust. you have it, or you don't.

when the group trusts you, knows you know your stuff, always
tell the truth the way you know it....you have learning.

teaching is not learning.
teaching style is not learning.
trust=learning.

add a bit of charisma, a bit of joy, and then
add total acceptance, black white, man woman, boy
girl, good looking basic...total acceptance.
you will have learning.

if you teach all you know...wheel, hand building, firing,
glaze...a bit of history...and your own trusted philosophy...
you will have happy students that are learning.

i was my own curriculum, when things were not going
well...it was my fault, throw it out and start over.
when people were generally unhappy, start over.
get their attention. eyes on me when i talk.
no note taking...pay attention to me.

do you have any idea how awesome it is tony, for you
to do a demo? same for me. it is magical.
but, that also is great intimidation.
it scares the hell out of folks...`crap, i can never throw that well.`
we have been doing it for years...thousands of pots.
so, i use other students as goal setters.
i have some better students demo...show their style.
set them up as in class heros. both boys and girls.
it sinks in fast. make sure the goals you set are real.

as i have said a thousand times...lie to a group of kids, just once.
they will never trust you again. all learning stops.
you can be outrageous, you can get mad as hell, you set
standards of discipline....and they will still trust you.

it is like doing politics in a class, or religion. do it, and you
think they are with you...but, you just lost about half the
class forever. they don't want to hear it. they get it
at every turn...they don't want it from their teacher...they
want art and craft...and real life experience. they want to
trust you.

2D artists tend to be visual learners. Potters tend to be
kinesthetic learners, learning by touch and doing. Many crafts as
well as sports and martial arts have this element. That is why it is
difficult to learn craftskills from photos. Videos are better,
because you can watch and feel the movement.

See article on auditor, visual and kinesthetic learning:
