Hi Lili
That was just the start of my testing about 6 years ago, with Tony's ToDo
white.(Tony was one of the first Clayart people I befriended from Darwin
Australia)
However, I changed and changed the recipe and ultimately used this one. But
it is very soft and perhaps underfired. I have fired it to cone 8 with
sucess.
My first base variation is:
ToDo variation Base
50 Neph. Sye
25 Dolomite
5 Whiting
20 Ball Clay
after many tries, I used a slight variation with a close Mol. Sub. of
Wollastonite for Whiting, which brings along some Silica, but still glaze is
very low at under 2.
50 Neph. Sye.
25 Dolomite
5 Wollastonite (would be 5.8 Mol. wt. sub)
20 Ball Clay
This is the base I have tested and tested with different balances of fluxes,
etc.
My ToDo variation base is a very mat, I think slightly underfired, glaze at
cone 6. I have fired it to ^8 where it does well. I have used it as a base
for many years, changing all kinds of balances in it. The first WoDo white I
made from it was with an addition of Wollstonite to try to get to melt
better. It does. The ToDo shows knife marks and the WoDo also shows knife
blade marks.
From there have been tested with so many variations because I like using
Feldspar and Dolomite in my bases. They give me surfaces I like, semi
glosses as opposed to ultra shiny I get more often with Frit.
The latest I best like is the one I call WoDo 40/10, with the addition of
Talc.
40 Neph. Sye
10 Talc
6 Wollastonite
25 Dolomite
20 Ball
That is where I made my mistake, mixing 40/10, could remember it and got the
start of the Butter Base.
I think it is so exciting to see these circle come around. But not closed.
My Butter Base has enough Silica and it is thus glossier than the original
mat whites.
We talk a lot about Frit and Boron in modern cone 6 and I like the idea of
other examples of glazes melted at this temp. with other ingredients. For
example high fire glazes with adjusted balances to get them to melt at lower
temperature. ToDo white I believe is underfired at ^6. However Deboos
clear appears melted. Butter base is melted.
3 days in Vinegar, 2 days under the lemon and no change of color in the
tiles with Copper and those with Copper and Rutile. I am going to make the
tests with a saturation of 6 percent Copper. However, since most stables
glaze leach with 6%, I am not sure what that will tell us. I am sure about
my acid tests and there is no change in color with the tiles between 3 and 6
percents of Copper.
Best regards, Alisa in Denmark

Comments: Glaze made because I mixed WoDo 40/10 wrong and could remember my
mistake. The initial mistake glaze looked semi mat which is a base I have
been trying to get. After some changes to get the Silica higher, I made
this base.
Silica good. High Alum. like shinos, no Boron. Like the MgO for matter
surface.
Good with Cobalt, fat whites with Titanium and Rutile. Browns and
undistinguished with Copper.
Overall a smooth surface, butter sheen, fattens up with additions of Rutile
and Titanium. Can get glossier with some oxide mix addtions. Copper gives
some oil spot effects, dark and browns. Good color results with Cobalt and
Opacifiers. Must look at edges, and closely overall, as there are many
color nunances and changes. Some high fire looks as well.

That would be a gyre, dear, and Alisa, you are a great light in the
Spiritus Mundi what with all your cool experimentationing and stuff.
We are lucky to be a part of your circling.
