John -- in XP you have your choice of two ways to
display the start menu, as a cascading set of tiles
or as a scrolling list. Getting the tiles to cascade
properly and give you a way to reach the last tile
can be an issue if you've got gobs of entries, especially
if you've selected large icons (they use of lots of
space).

Three solutions, all easy.

1 - Start Menu/Properties/Customize/General/
and select small icons. This fits lots more
items per tile.

2 - Start Menu/Properties/Customize/Advanced/
Start Menu Items and choose scroll.

3 - create a few folders and add them to the start
menu (create them on the first tile, so you can reach
them easily). Do you have lots of paint programs?
Editing programs? Drag and drop them together,
rename the new folders to indicate what's inside.
Every new folder with two or more items in it now
reduces the number of items you need to get on to
the tiles.

Sorry for the NCC (No Clayart Content) use of bandwidth here, but I'm
sort of dumbed down this morning.Sure could use some help

I'm running WinXP on an Intel machine, and I have a problem.

I have a huge load of active programs on my computer. I use the heck out
of them. When I go to the START menu and call up the ALL PROGRAMS menu,
I get this list of program icon links to choose from to open any given
program.

The problem I now have is that my list of program icons is so large that
WinXP puts them up in vertical panels and the number of panels extends
across the screen and disappears under the edge of the screen to the
right. I can't see all the panels and therefore the icons.

Is there any way to fix this problem? Am I overlooking something simple?
I have the resolution already set at the smallest comfortable size and
still the icons are out of visual range. Surely there must be a better
way around this problem rather than smaller resolution?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Please respond off-list.

Thanks,

John

(1) Yes, get a Mac (OK, just kidding. But I'm trying to prepare you
for the "advice" that almost invariably comes when one of us hapless
Windows users has a problem!)

(2) Get a bigger monitor, of the sort that can be rotated from
landscape to portrait view (sorry--more kidding)

(3) Get Gmail (that suggestion will come from Lee, of course) ;-)

>Am I overlooking something simple?

Yup!

Just as you'll see that there are already Folders in your current
Start Menu (for example Accessories, Administrative Tools, etc.) you
can create folders of your own. I have created folders for Graphics,
Reference, Players, and several others. And these can contain even
lower level folders.

Using Windows Explorer, you simply navigate to
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
and create additional folders there, and then move some of those
program short-cuts into them.

I'll do that, too, but I've seen enough humongous Start Menus like
yours to think others here might find this useful.

John,

This is a legitimate question as we all use computers to communicate and that is what clay art is, communication.

I would suggest removing some of those unused programs via the control panel. There is no doubt in my mind that you are "bogging" your system down and you may want to look at what you are currently not using and remove them--and this will increase your performance. Many programs can have pre-loaders in your system task (ctrl alt del will pull it up and you can see what is running under apps and tasks) that will consume your ram which affects how much of the program you may want to use and how effectivly it will run. Available hard drive space will also affect performance.

The Menu system should through sub menus keep presenting itself to the right of the screen. If I understand you correctly, you have filled your screen? Send me a screen shot please. I've never seen a full screen!

To my knowledge, based on your screen rez will affect what is visible, there is no way to move beyond what is presented.

Fellow Clayfolk -

Gail - who may reached at figglywig@att.net - provided the best
solution to my query.

>>>
Click Start, Control Panel, Taskbar and Start menu, Start Menu tab,
Customize, Advanced. In the Start Menu Items window, look for the check
box that says 'Scroll Programs', and check it. Click OK, OK, and close
the Control Panel.
<<<<

That really worked well. It gave me a single, infinitely long panel
containing a list of all my programs.

Thanks to all who responded to my query, and special thanks to Gail.

Heh, nonsense! He can also get Linux. ;-)

Seriously, the first thing to do is to uninstall some of the programs
you don't actually use. I find it hard to believe that you're actually
actively using 200 different programs; I don't, and I do computers for a
living.

Second, you can organize the Programs menu into folders. The Programs
menu is actually a directory under System/Windows/ (they've moved it in
XP, so I'm not absolutely sure where, but look around for it). If you
log in as Administrator, you should be able to organize all your
programs into a heirarchy of folders so that you can navigate them better.

Thanks Gail. I actually don't fill my menus so I switched it back but very good to know. Thanks again. Such great knowledge of many diverse things on clayart.
