credit crunch, anyone else have any tales to tell?

Just curious if anyone has had any direct experience with our financial
problems?
I believe I encountered it firsthand last night when attempting to buy
postage online to ship orders out to four galleries. I use Stamps.com, an
affiliate of the post office, so that I can weigh and size my own boxes, and
print postage paid mailing labels and then just drop the parcels off at the
loading dock of my local post office for shipment. It relies on credit card
purchasing of the postage. Well, last night both my credit cards were
refused, despite my never paying late, and always paying off the balance at
the end of the billing period.
A bit vexing, to be sure. If I am having this problem, surely bigger and
more complex operations are having even more problems.
Anyone else having similar experiences? I'm trying to foresee all the
possible problems, and wonder if anyone can give me a brief overview
(without getting too wonky or political)...
Best,
Richard

I think you are misinterpreting the concept of "credit crunch". If you pay
your bills on time, the banks and credit card companies will be delighted to
continue lending you money. If your credit cards have been "turned off",
you should contact your bank immediately to make sure you weren't the victim
of identity theft or fraud. If you have been a victim of identity theft or
had your number stolen, as I have, your bank may restrict your ability to
make purchases over the internet. That is usually resolved with a phone
call, generally at the time of purchase. This has happened to me.

What will be affected in an individual level is the ability to gain credit
to buy a home, car, or anything that requires a large loan. And it's
cyclical: just because you may be able to buy a home with your good credit
and a large down payment doesn't mean you will be able to sell the one you
have now. On a business level, it's going to be a lot tougher for
businesses to borrow money for capital expenses, etc. Costs, of course,
will be passed on to the consumer.

Again, this shouldn't affect your personal credit cards if you have paid
your bills on time. I'm curious - what did your bank say when you told them
you couldn't use your cards? Did they use credit crunch as an excuse?

Hi from Tuscany:

There are 16 of us here at La Meridiana for Malcolm Davis' workshop.
Several people have had some issues with withdrawing Euros from the ATM
when they never had problems before. Scary. Don't know if they would
have the same problem while in the US.

Other than that, it is wonderful here. I am a lucky woman.
Visit La Meridiana at: http://www.lameridiana.fi.it/index.htm

Best to all,
Lori L.
