*********************IAC Xi'an China 2008=2C Sub-conference in YixingThe IA=
C assembly was hosted on September 10 - 14th. Several hundred ceramic artis=
ts=2C writers=2C collectors=2C related experts and friends from all over th=
e world were gathering together in Xi'an. People were able to see the rich =
Chinese ceramic history and meet many Chinese ceramic artists. The people h=
ad traveled in many different directions for post-conference tours. The Chi=
na Ceramic Industry Association worked with the local government and arrang=
ed the sub-conferences in Zibo=2C Shandong province=2C Jingdezhen=2C Jiangx=
i Province=2C Longquan=2C Zhejiang Province and Yixing=2C Jiangsu Province.=
There was a group of 30 (the largest group) who arrived in Yixing in the a=
fternoon on September 18 for the three - day conference (Sept. 18-20). The =
Yixing Government paid the extra required to upgrade the hotel rooms and me=
als and provided an official welcome banquet on September 19th. On the open=
ing meeting of the Yixing sub-conference=2C Guangzhen Zhou (Po) handed over=
three teapots that had been donated to Yixing Ceramic Museum from female a=
rtists from Argentina. There was also a short slides talk by both Chinese a=
rtists and IAC members. During the time in Yixing=2C we were followed by a =
few journalists from the local news medium. On the next day=2C we had some =
pictures printed on the first page of the papers=2C and many of them were p=
osted online on the Chinese news mediums.Po Zhou has learned to say the mag=
ic Chinese words in English from his American friend Richard H. ("Ric") Swe=
nson=2C the English Teacher at Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute=2C China. Po Zh=
ou has told the IAC group to shout together: "wall-eye-knee (Wo-Ai-Ni=2C me=
aning 'I love you')=2C Yixing!" at the banquet. It worked great and our Chi=
nese friends laughed! Thanks to all of the IAC committee members and all of =
the others who have contributed to this event.
*************************Letter from Jackie HymanDear Po=2CYou did a splend=
id job - far above my expectations - of organizing our recent trip to China=
to attend the International Academy of Ceramics conference in Xi'an=2C and=
of coordinating and supervising our pre-conference tour of Shanghai. My mo=
ther=2C IAC member and well-known ceramist Sylvia Hyman=2C celebrated her 9=
1st birthday on the trip and needed a wheelchair. You went out of your way =
to make her comfortable and secure arrangements to meet her special needs.F=
rom arranging our visas to choosing Shanghai restaurants that displayed the=
range of Chinese cuisine=2C you showed attention to detail far beyond anyt=
hing I have experienced with other tour organizers. My mother=2C her studio=
assistant Cathy Moberg and I were deeply impressed. When my mother suffered=
a medical emergency during the conference in Xi'an=2C you went out of your=
way to help=2C even though we were no longer your responsibility. You assi=
sted us with contacting the U.S. Embassy to secure permission for a medical=
jet to land in the Chinese interior=2C and=2C since the jet could transpor=
t only Sylvia and Cathy=2C you changed your travel plans to escort me perso=
nally back to Shanghai=2C right to the ticket counter at American Airlines.=
Please accept my heartfelt thanks=2C and enduring friendship.Warmly=2CJacki=
