converted work table

One of my realatives was getting rid of their old heavy wood kitchen table, and wanted to know if I wanted it for my studio. I would lobe to convert it into a worktable and thought I could stretch canvas over it so the clay wouldn't stick. Should I put some sort of backing underneath the canvas? Any ideas on the best way to do this?

Candace,
In order to protect an old table and still use it as
a wedging table, cover it with plastic sheet, then
sheet rock (type X preferred) and finally, canvas.
Lay the canvas out first to make sure you can do
a nearly full pass around the table. Sew two loops,
one on each edge, large enough to allow passage
of a 3/8" steel rod through each hem. At each corner
and in the middle, cut an access hole for
radiator hose clamps to tension the canvas.
I like this scheme because the cover can be rotated
with respect to the table as it wears out simply by
loosening the hose clamps and moving the canvas.
