artist-in-residence opportunities?

updated wed 26 nov 08

I'm thinking I may need to isolate myself in a supportive studio environment
away from my day-to-day in which I am easily throw off track from art-making
and would like some concentrated focused time.... Does anyone have
experience with &/or recommendations for artist-in-resident types of
opportunities in which there is the facility for working in clay and
possibly other media, perhaps even a bit of mentorship (?) --- for perhaps a
month to three month stint accepted by proposal. I assume, to develop a body
of work and in which you don't have to be a famous artist to be accepted?

Thanks,
Centa Theresa

Hi Centa:
I am note sure how "famous" you are talking about but, if you have a pretty
good resume I would like to suggest the program in Seto, Japan. Seto is one
of the original kiln sites in Japan and continues to have a strong ceramic
community(like the US, most of the ceramic centers in Japan are under
increasing pressure from less developed economies so "strong" is a relative
term).

The Seto Facility is wonderful and the people couldn't be nicer. It is a
chance to surround yourself with ceramic history while working on your own,
contemporary creations. I participated in 2001 and loved every minute. If
accepted, they will cover some of your expenses although the exact amount
has changed over the years. For more information, please contact Ikue
MIYANAGA, Coordinator at .

You might also look online at "Res Artis" . This is an
international organization of residency programs. Go somewhere fun and
interesting!

If you have any specific questions please email me at <

Good luck.

Dear Centa,

I cannot think of anywhere giving better chances of concentrated work than =
Guldagergaard in Skaelskor, Denmark. But I am biased as I helped to start t=
he program up 11 years ago.
As there are between 10 and 15 residents at any time there are plenty of di=
scussions and the possiblity of peer-mentoring...
Guldagergaard lies on the outskirts of a very small town so distractions ar=
e few, and the residents seem to work day and night, often 7 days a week.
The website: www.ceramic.dk gives details.=20
My blog has also some pictures from Guldagergaard in the older posts as I d=
o all my firing there:

My McKnight residency was great at Northern Clay Center. Comes with a
$5,000.00 award.

My soon to be new housemate Junko Nomura is up at St. John's where
she did a Jerome residency with Richard Breshnehan. Her sculpture was
fired in his last woodkiln firing.

My previous housemate, Steve Wicklund, is doing a residency at the
Clay Studio of Missoula right now.

There are so many possibilities.

I've had my eye on Guldagergaard for a time. I may have learned about
it from your flickr site or maybe when I fired in Flagstaff.
