Interesting article in Interceram 4-2008, volume 57 by J. Liebermann.
Relates to High Strength Bauxite Porcelain and the special impact of
reducing atmosphere firing atmospheres. Bauxite and Illite are used to
replace Kaolin as sources of Alumina.
Among the nuggets of information is reference to using Illitic three
layer clay to enhance plasticity and the reaction between reduced iron
oxide and silica during sintering to give Fayalite which assists in
the induction of eutectic melting at approximately 1170 deg C.
There is also mention of a reaction between TiO2 and FeO creating
Ilmenite which accounts for the conspicuously intense grey colour of
Bauxite porcelains fired in reducing atmospheres.

Ivor Lewis.
