Hi Donna,

You could check out the instructions for building an earth oven on Kelly

Elizabeth, I am so fond of your work--it has always appealed to me.
The animals are so 'alive' and you capture the essence of each of
them! So I was thinking how would one choose a favorite form they are
all so appealing. But when it came to the functional work there was
no question--that is my favorite! I am stuck on functional work
anyway but I really love the functional work with your great paintings
in/on them. Especially the bowls!
On the other hand, the picture was fuzzy--a bit of a distraction as I
kept trying to get it into focus.
On the other hand, I loved the background music--your husband's work I
assume. Very nice!

Thank you, Jeff is awesome. =3DA0I'm keeping him.
he said the images might degrade some over youtube. =3DA0I am sorry about t=

I first learned painting over two years of studying gongbi flower and bird =

=3D
ly to distinguish its subjects from landscapre (with municipalities and bui=

So any animal goes! =3DA0not just the flowers and birds.I paint from nature=

nautica, like crabs, egrets, shrimp, and fish are part of MY environment an=

No, it wasn't too long and I even would have spent longer looking at some=

I work in somewhat the same way you do. I paint over the unfired glaze=3D20

colours and workability I want. A lot of my designs are free-hand, while=3D=

HI Elizabeth,
Well, you already know what I think about your work. I
love this type of brush work because
it strips things right down to their essence.
It s difficult to capture the spirit of something confidently
in a few brush strokes ( my painting tends to be as verbose as
I am ) so I admire people who can paint short, sweet and to
the point. Your work is bold, yet delicate..
a really intriguing combination ... I also love
the muted color palette you choose.
I think my favorite pieces are the ones on
the black slabs. I love the contrast between the ruggedness
of the slab and the delicacy of the painting. They really
show each other off well... I also love the mermaid series .
Being a portraitist , faces always interest
me... and my critters will leave "messages " in my shoes
if I dont say I love the cat :O) ...
As for the video itself : the first little bit
of it went by really fast but by the time it got to
the Discovery House one, it settled into a nice pace after
that... just right. If I could suggest one thing,
it would be to break this up into a few parts.. 8 minutes
is a little long to view a slide show even when the work
is really nice .
And the background music: this is the FIRST time Ive ever watched
a You-tube slide show and didnt hit the mute button . Usually
music over slide shows starts grating on me after a couple of
minutes ... but this was really nice and really set the
mood for your work... GIve that man a hug !..He done good :O)
...and so did you .

Hi Elizabeth,
I really like the looseness of your brush work and I feel that it is best
displayed on the flat pieces. I really like the grasshoppers and other
insects, more so than the flowers.
I just had a quick scan through but somehow the form of the functional work
does not seem to work for me and the brush work which is rather delicate,
clashes with the chunkiness of the pots. This is just my personal view but =
I
find the functional forms - the squat vases and bowls just need a more
elegant form that suits your beautiful brush work better.

Thank you!
In the functional realm, I am partial to ricebowls. =3DA0The tension works =
wi=3D
th the painting better and the surface is MUCH easier to paint. =3DA0There =
is=3D
a vase form with wisteria that is also elegant. =3DA0The functional work w=
as=3D
mostly done for one particular show where the idea was an homage to a line=
=3D
of work I did about a decade ago. =3DA0My painting had progressed beyond t=
he=3D
chunkiness you describe, but I did not want to fire a whole shows worth of=
=3D
vases and bowls that people in my neck of the woods don't really get, rice=
=3D
bowls. =3DA0(around here, where the local show I was working towards was, =
I =3D
get "well, what is that used for?" whenever I put them out.)
I have been looking for the right form for a crab, something that would be =
=3D
handy for eating blue crab, which is our local favorite. =3DA0A big bowl hi=
ts=3D
it with a purpose attached to she crab soup, but the boiled crab situation=
=3D
defies me. =3DA0I have no idea how that translates to vessels because they=
a=3D
re usually smashed and eaten on picnic tables covered with newspaper down h=
=3D
ere.
That's it! =3DA0Rice paper paintings to line the tables!
Kidding...I think probably I should maybe make smaller vessels to serve the=
=3D
butter and bread. =3DA0
I understand your criticism. =3DA0It is a continual editing process. =3DA0I=
pri=3D
marily work on flat pieces now, as it is my preferred form, but I am consid=
=3D
ering some of the larger slab vases again, as assembling all the pictures f=
=3D
or the galleries reminded me of some interesting things that I had done and=
=3D
moved on from. =3DA0Also the small pieces with the multiple windows.
Thanks again...E

In terms of speed, I paint very fast.
The usual run for me is to prepare a large table full of blanks ready to pa=
=3D
int and then warm up on paper. =3DA0Then to it from photographs of actual c=
ri=3D
tters. =3DA0But I always run out of forms quickly. =3DA0The biggest mistake=
is =3D
painting too much in such a small space as a pot.
And on a small lizard bowl, the painting can take less than a minute so you=
=3D
buzz throught he bisque pretty quick. =3DA0The larger tiles take longer bu=
t =3D
I did one in a demo at the Steven Mills workshop and even with doing it in =
=3D
super slow-mo, it took maybe 5 minutes.
And the thing is that if I paint slower, the paintings suffer. =3DA0To make=
t=3D
hem beautiful, I need to keep the connection between my =3DA0mind heart and=
h=3D
and consistent and electric. =3DA0If you hesitate, it is an indication that=
y=3D
our feeling is conflicted and that makes for a muddy image.
How's that for a super flake-out? =3DA0But sometimes, describing artistic e=
xp=3D
ression approaches the need for artspeak. =3DA0There a long, hard to read, =
or=3D
iginally in chinese, esoteric books about the "right relationship between m=
=3D
ind, brush, and hand". =3DA0And when I first read it, I really did not unde=
rs=3D
tand what they were talking about. =3DA0Now that I get it and can do it, I =
re=3D
alize how hard it is to write about.
Thank you very much. =3DA0The thing you like was the hardest thing I have e=
ve=3D
r done with clay. =3DA0A light and free expressiveness is hard to learn and=
h=3D
ard to teach as well.
I was grateful for a formal design background to help me get from the inart=
=3D
iculate place I started from to the ability to capture the crazy-ness of na=
=3D
ture that makes me happiest with my painting. =3DA0If it makes me laugh, I =
ge=3D
t excited.
