Hello potters=3D2C

I just ordered a pound of Tin Oxide (expensive stuff!) as I want to try chr=
=3D
ome/tin pinks at Cone 6 Oxidation=3D2C but I need to substitute some ingred=
ie=3D
nts and I don't have glaze calculating software at this time.

=3D20

My first inquiry is directed at Ron Roy or John Hesselberth regarding their=
=3D
raspberry glaze in MC6G. I don't have Nepheline Syenite or OM-4 Ball Clay=
=3D
=3D2C but I do have NC-4 Soda Feldspar=3D2C Custer Feldspar=3D2C EPK=3D2C W=
ollaston=3D
ite=3D2C and Talc=3D2C if any of that helps.

=3D20

I also want to try one posted in the Clayart 2003 archives by Bill Edwards.=
=3D
It is:

=3D20

Nepth Syen (Blue Mountain) - 25.00=3D20
Wollastonite - 20.00=3D20
Ferro 3134 - 15.00=3D20
EPK - 15.00=3D20
Silica - 20.00=3D20
Talc - 5.00=3D20

Add:

0.30% Chromium Oxide green=3D20
6.00% Tin Oxide

=3D20

All I'm missing in this one is the nepheline syenite=3D2C though I guess it=
w=3D
ould also help to have an analysis to get a look at if it is worth trying (=
=3D
I do functional work). It doesn't look weird to me but again I just don't =
=3D
have the software to know exactly.

=3D20

I also found some helpful information from Tony Hansen in the archives:

=3D20

"I tried a rather fascinating exercise in=3D20
calculating a substitute. I put F4 feldspar=3D20
on one side (in INSIGHT) and fiddled with the=3D20
recipe on the other side and got about 77 Nepheline=3D2C=3D20
3 Wollastonite=3D2C 4 EPK and 16 Silica to create the=3D20
same chemistry."

=3D20

Has anyone tried this? Tony=3D2C did you ever actually try this substituti=
on=3D
method? Did it work?

=3D20

Or=3D2C if anyone else has a recipe for a chrome-tin pink that uses soda or=
c=3D
uster spar and EPK=3D2C I would love to have it if you are feeling generous=
.

=3D20

Thanks=3D2C

Hi Miriam,

Chrome/tin pinks are very sensitive to glaze composition including,
apparently, trace ingredients which are not included in glaze
calculation. For example I was not able to get it to work with EPK
even with the same unity formula as the one that did work with ball
clay. So the bottom line is that I can't tell you how to substitute on
this one. If you have access to Gerstley Borate you may be able to get
it to work with a GB-based recipe. I didn't want to use GB because of
its questionable availability and variable composition.

Regards,

John
