Blackbird and Barnard are the same clay. How different are the two =3D
directly from the sack. Many potters from the past used barnard to =3D
develop celadon glazes. Barnard/blackbird makes a beautiful body stain =3D
at cone 10 in Reduction. If I remember correctly it has about 2o % of =3D
iron oxide in it. Use it with water. Lots of water and some barnard. =3D
It will keep settling so you have to keep stirring it as you use it. It =
=3D
will not harden up when you stop stirring. Make it cover the body as a =3D
thin wash. I dampen the area to be stained and use a sponge to apply it =
=3D
in a very liguid manner. When the piece is drier, I use a slightly damp =
=3D
sponge to take off excess stain. It is very nice when the high area are =
=3D
wiped off some and the lower areas have more stain left going darker =3D
when fired. I many times control the Barnard in certain area let the =3D
stain dry and wax over it. I dip, pour or spray a glaze on the unwaxed =3D
area. If you glaze over the Barnard, it will have the effect of glazing =
=3D
over iron oxide when used in the same manner. If you are using a warm =3D
stoneware, apply the Barnard, and then apply a thin layer of copper =3D
carbonite over it. This will make the clay even warmer looking. Dom't =3D
grt the copper on to heavily or it will be too dark. The copper can =3D
have a little ball clay in it to help with the settling of the copper in =
=3D
the water. Just keep stirring. This treatment is seldom used or known =3D
about., it's a little time consuming, but makes the clay a beautiful =3D
orange in reduction at cone 10. Copper over a ormally warm stoneware =3D
clay body doesn't need to have Barnard under it. The copper\ball clay =3D
and water mix should ave a very pale look when dry. It needs to be =3D
a[[yied as a transparent veil....don't sell your Barnard!!!! Use =3D
it!!! Bill Merrill bmerrill@pencol.edu

Subject: Barnard/Blackbird clay

Digging deeply into the clay supply at our art center, I have discovered =
=3D
1 bag each of
blackbird and Barnard clays. I realize both are extinct, but would like =
=3D
to use these. I feel
almost guilty having this stuff and not knowing what to use it for! =3D
Can somebody share
recipes and information on these materials? Can I use them as a =3D
decorating slip on cone
10 reduction stoneware/ leatherhard or wet or on bisque? Also, what =3D
would I add to get a
black glaze at 10 reduction? I have used this as a stain on bisque.=3D20
Thanks.
