got a bad shelf in st. louis?

updated sun 6 sep 09

Hi-

I have an acquaintance: a young woman who
has been a self-supporting emancipated minor
for several years - working, staying in school,
and paying her own way. She recently got an
old kiln for next to nothing, and has been
teaching herself ceramics.

Unfortunately, she made an all-too-common
beginner's mistake - thinking that 'kiln wash'
was some sort of clean-up material rather than
a preventative... Attempts to remove a badly
stuck glaze accident weren't going well, so
I invited her to bring it out to my place and I'd
help her get it loose and fix up the shelf. She
was also going to sit as a model for a project
I was working on. Well...turns out she didn't
have any transportation that day, so instead of
cancelling or complaining (or even mentioning
it), she strapped that shelf to her bicycle and
rode the seven or eight hilly miles out to my
place. In avoiding a car, she hit gravel and
wiped out, resulting in minor injuries and the
total destruction of her only kiln shelf (though
the pot did finally come loose!)

I don't technically owe her anything, I suppose,
but I feel terrible about it. Unfortunately, my kiln
shelves won't fit her kiln, and I can't afford to buy
a new one for her right now.

Anyone have an old 8-sided (or similar size) shelf
or two that I could buy for a modest rate, and pick
up in the St. Louis metro area (Eastern Missouri/
southern Illinois, USA)? Messed up or broken
would still be useful and welcome; I can fix 'messed
up', and a two-part shelf is still better than what she's
got. I'd like to help this girl out. She's a hard-working
self-starter with a lot of guts who never asks for
help, but everybody needs a hand sometimes.

How about this:

Anyone who wants to donate a shelf, great!
Anyone who wants to send money, I will
collect it, and whatever comes in over and
above the acquisition of three shelves and
some posts, I could set up as a gift certificate
for her at the local supplier?

She may never turn 'pro' - it's too soon for
her to decide that. She needs some time
to figure out her long-term goals and the best
way to reach them, but I have no doubt that
she'll be a force to reckon with once she
makes that commitment!

She will be moving to a place near me
fairly soon, and I'll be able to help her out
a lot more. She seldom asks for help, and
she didn't ask for this, but I figure I owe her
a little. I give her advice when it seems
welcome, and encouragement, as well as
a standing offer to fire in my kiln for free.
She fought hard for her autonomy, though,
and I respect her need to be independent
even when it means a few hardships along
the way.

Wow!

i am awestruck by the generosity of people out there
on Clayart, helping out someone that they've never
even met.

Many, many people have kicked in money toward
Natalie's Kiln Shelf Fund via check, cash, and
PayPal, mostly in $5.00 - $10.00 amounts (though
some much higher). Some came with personal notes
and even small gifts, others without even a return
address. Adding it all up, the current tally is $465.

That is amazing!

That will be more than enough to get three shelves,
a good range of posts, some kiln wash(!), perhaps
a book, and a really good quantity of materials, too.
I will offer suggestions, but I will leave it to her to make
her own choices. She will be quite embarrassed by
such largesse, but I have no doubt that she will put
it to earnest good use.

I will wait a few more days to see what else comes
in the mail, then set up a credit account at Krueger
Pottery Supply in her name.

Thank you all,

Snail Scott

Well, I don't know Natalie but I do know Snail. Natalie could not
have a better reference to us than Snail Scott! I know someday--in
various ways--Natalie will "clay it forward". So the cycle continues!
Thanks for making it all possible!
