101 clayart mugs (maybe more)

I keep getting inquires on this and even a few mugs have been sent
to me although I have asked people to not send mugs yet. I need to either
get this thing into action or put it to rest. The only way that I could
make this a "GO" would be to allow anyone to ship a mug to me who wants to
participate, no jurying, no limit on the number of participants. The mugs
would become my property and would be displayed and eventually sold or
donated as I saw fit. It is presumptious to think that potters would send
a mug to me in order to be a part of an exhibit of possibly the largest
collection of mugs created by potters from around the globe or would it?
(Would have to check the Guiness Book of World Records). If it should
happen then I would display and promote the exhibit as best I could. I
think it could be quite a calling card and an attention getter. This could
be rather interesting to perhaps have hundreds of mugs on display from
hundreds of potters from around the globe. I get these wild ideas and then
I say what the "heck"... go for it... what have I got to lose? Think about
it and let me hear your comments. You can e-mail me directly if you
like.....

What I would hope is that someone would be willing to assemble this
collection, catalog it, and plan ahead for NCECA 1999 - or some other such
venue to display the mugs.

Maybe just having everyone send you a mug would be the simplest way to go
(making certain they send along the necessary bio stuff.) Can you handle the
cataloging and storage? Maybe they could be displayed in your own gallery
until then, if you have room?

When I think of all the bars I've been in that have huge collections of
baseball hats, men's ties, women's undergarments, etc. hanging off the ceiling
I have to think ... why not hundreds of cups?

Carolynn....
I do have some storage areas... keeping an inventory of what mug
belongs to whom could be fairly simple if most of the potters have some
form of business card that accomodates the mug. If I do hold the exhibit
this summer then the mugs will be displayed and those mugs will be sold as
my customers choose and purchase their favorites. The potters' business
card would accomodate the mugs so that the customers would be able to
contact the potters directly for additional purchases. The potters whose
work sold would be contacted immediately and those potters could replace
the mugs as they wished. That arrangement would allow me to make holding
such an exhibit affordable. Gallery space and time would be paid for by
such an arrangement. Summers are very busy for us and we depend on the
income from our summer business even though we have other sources of
income. At the appropriate time the mugs could be shipped to the NCECA '99
location. However, most potter's work does evolve quite a bit in a year's
time and many of them would want a more recent mug for the '99 NCECA.

Hello all-

Just thought I'd mention here that it is Marshall's intent to keep all
proceeds from the sale. I had thought (erroneously as it turns out) that
Marshall would share sales proceeds but to quote a private posting from
him:

Bonnie... I do intend to keep the proceeds or do as I see fit with the
proceeds if I do the exhibit.... Marshall

If this isn't specific enough, he previously wrote:

Bonnie...
I understand your point but I am looking at time and gallery space
issues. It is very difficult to understand my position on this unless you
have operated a gallery and have been involved in promoting and holding an
exhibit. I am sorry that I can't accomodate everyone's desires but I know
what will work for me and what will not work. This would be a
advertisement opportunity for the participants.

Regards ...Marshall

I am not criticizing him, merely pointing out how things will work.
Clearly it's up to each person whether or not to participate.
