red herrings in the suburbs

As much as I shudder at the contemporary trend to spill every single =3D
bean, I neither understand the joke, nor think the problem claimed is =3D
the actual problem.

Monsieur built a studio in the garage, and a kiln in the back yard. =3D
Madame said "Over my dead body."
No one has told us yet what was happening in the garage. Does Madame =3D
store antique surreys there and wonder whether they will suffer from =3D
clay/water? Is part of the garage "her" workshop, potting shed, bicycle =
=3D
repair shop? Is the back yard a free and open no-wo/man's land or is it =
=3D
a small space with lovely flower beds and a darling wrought iron table =3D
with matching chairs?

No one has told us how big the garage is. Is there actual room to store =
=3D
stuff? Or will there be garbage cans of material in the backyard? =3D
Would a shed, as suggested, fit? Look great or look like *&&^^%$#?

No one has told us how big a kiln, whether gas or wood....How close kiln =
=3D
is to actual buidings, and existing arboretum...

A hobby, any hobby can cause a serious marital rift. Wife likes to =3D
participate in Civil War re-nactments. Husband hates the whole =3D
thing, minds the time it takes her away from home, cost, space used for =3D
storage of stuff etc. Husband and buddies take a yearly hunting trip to =
=3D
some distant spot in Canada. Wife minds expense, his absence when he =3D
should be fixing the roof, or digging up the septic tank...And above all =
=3D
the cost of stuffing those heads, and their look on the walls.......Need =
=3D
we go on?

We have had lots of sad stories of serious disputes over a "hobby." A =3D
perfectly nice person who used to spend weekends going on birdwatching =3D
hikes with spouse now spends that time in the mud. Money spent buying =3D
books, or taking trips, or going out to dinner, now is spent on clay and =
=3D
firing....The non clay spouse insists the potter make money at clay or =3D
give it up....This is NOT a problem to be shrugged off. =3D20

All the caveats about permits and insurance apply. Does your =3D
homeowners insurance cover you if a guest to your studio slips and
breaks a leg? If neighbor's cat decides your firebox is a great place =3D
to store kittens--and forgets to tell you....I have no idea what is and =3D
is not permitted in your area....but by all means, listen, and listen =3D
good--do not bypass or circumvent, ignore or avoid rules and =3D
regulations.....Just because the mayor's twin has a fireworks factory =3D
down the street, does not guarantee you can get away with grilling =3D
frankfurters in your backyard.

I think there is more here than meets the eye. I think something here =3D
is not being discussed. =3D20

Let me tell you a story. A dear friend who had been a hellion in her =3D
youth now was the manager of a small business of the Fat Food type...A =3D
one point she was convinced by a social worker to hire a kid who had =3D
been in jail for something or other...and needed a "first job."

She took him on. Then one day Kid said: "My grandmother is not well--I =3D
need to go to [town 50 miles away] to see her." "Fine," says my friend. =
=3D
You guessed it. Phone call announces grandmother died....Kid returns a =
=3D
week later, and friend asks: "How was the funeral?" Kid says :" OK." =3D
"Were there calling hours?" Kid looks blank. "Open or closed casket?" =
=3D
Kid looks blank.....Friend says: "Look, Kiddo. I know all those excuses, =
=3D
DON'T TRY'EM ON ME!"

If Madame does not want all this it needs talking about....Building a =3D
kiln on the QT strikes this harridan as childish and non-productive.
