here is a series of pictures from carol marians.
she has been doing various downfire techniques...and here
is the evidence.
it is amazing what slow cooling will do.

it is not the kind of kiln you own, it is what you
do with that kiln that counts.

Thanks for posting these - very interesting.

To help understand some of the results - firing back up can result in the
previously formed crystals melting again. In other words - to get optimum
crystal growth you must be careful to not remelt what has already formed.
