We did the before and after and found it well worth the time. Showed us the
cost of the glaze to be less than $1.00 for most any pot we make. Maybe
$2.00 for a very big bowl. This gave us a base to charge others who use our
glazes. The real cost in home make glaze is in your time not what is in the
bucket. When it comes to setting a price for selling glaze we come up with
about the same as any commercial glaze.
I am glad we do make our own as we have learned a lot and have a glaze that
work well for us and we know how to fix any glaze in the future.

Wouldn't it be more productive to make more pots than sit around trying
to figure how much glaze is on a pots? =3D20

I took the 15 minutes to figure out the cost of making
a 5 kg batch of one of my glazes. It's $11.51. I don't
need to worry about working out how many pots that amount
will glaze because it's a large number. The cost of the
glaze per pot becomes negligible--less than 10 cents.
On larger pots, it may be a little more. But I don't
consider the glaze cost or even the clay cost when deciding
what to price my pots.
A couple of potters who participated in Clay Fest through
the Triangle Potters Guild were having a pricing discussion
yesterday. And one of them was very scientific in her
calculations. The other one and I were more seat of the
pants. We know how much clay we're using and how much that
costs, but it's not that big a deal.
For instance, I am selling my ikebana vases for more now
and making them in three sizes. To be honest, there's not
much more work in making the medium size one rather than a
small one--and cost for the amount of clay isn't much
either: 19 cents for a small vase and 26 cents for the
medium one. And yet some people are willing to pay $3 more
for the medium one.
