Dear Wood-Firers

I'm applying for a permit to build a wood-fired kiln in Northen New
York State. . . a place where I go often, and where there is a lot of
cheap firewood.

I'm looking to design my own version of a combination Anagama with
firebox hitched up to an arched Noborigama/main chamber, with
something like a total stacking area of 30-50 cf.

At this point I need just outline plans to submit so I can build the
kiln roof structure, pour the pad, and successfully obtain the permit
from the Adirondack Park Agency. I need to show overall dimensions and
what the finished kiln will 'look like'.

Does anyone have plans that you can share with me? I'd be happy to pay
for detailed plans down the line (to me 'detailed' means exact list of
materials, brick counts, and stacking plans, with precise dimensions
etc.), but initially I just need ideas for what I should construct and
overall dimensions so I can get the permit process started.

In any event I'm likely to want to modify any design so I'm looking
for as many ideas as possible. I'd value any of your thoughts.

My design parameters are:

1) Low spark-emission (a 'collection-box' might be necessary)
2) Easy stacking and loading. I'm 55 and my back is paying the price
of lifting too many shelves, and wedging too much clay.
3) No pure fiber exterior . . . this is the land of black-bears!

best,

Mark Potter
