power surge, lightning are all dangerous, and
the surge often rides right in on the modem.
so.
i use three power protectors.
one from the power source, and then
plug in a second to that.
then a third to that.
plug my stuff into the third.
i have a fourth coming from that one...but that
is just for my outboard drives.
see, i have collected those power strips/trip breakers
from garage sales.
pay a buck for them.
have a pile in the studio too.
so.
they are very cheap insurance.
i am always amazed at seeing how folks plug stuff
in/esp in spring and early summer when we have
lightning storms once a week.
but, then they just bitch about the `surge wrecking everthing`.
o`h, yes, i was going to get one of those things.`
at the farm i ran a copper wire down from the top of my
tv antenna into a long copper rod into the ground.
i ground everything in the house, and have power surge
and shut everything down when i leave.
score.
neighbor, hit 6 times by lighning..about twenty phones in a box
in the barn. 54 inch flat screen turned blue, on and on.
me...0
mel, and i want to keep it that way.

Referencing Mel's post below, I would like to add something -
Get an Uniterruptible Power Supply (UPS), aka a Battery Backup. They are ab=
out $40 for a small one, and unless you have everything and then some plugg=
ed in by your computer, it should be enough. There are bigger ones, and the=
larger the power supply is in your computer the larger UPS you may need. F=
or example, if you have a top end gaming system, it will probably have a hi=
gher voltage power supply in it. Same goes for top end graphics - if the gr=
aphics card has a fan and memory of its own, it will take more power.
That being said, your surge strip is the next most important thing - get a =
good one - they are rated by how many joules they will protect against (goo=
gle it, and learn something about electricity today). They also have insura=
nce to cover replacement of your equipment, if you register your strip afte=
r you buy it. Read the packaging.
