Unplug the kiln. Cover the elements in the area with a plastic ot
paper towel. Dampen the area
of the brick where you will apply the brick patch. Then apply the
patch and keep it off the elements.
SHouldn't be difficult it you cover the elements with something.
Howard Arnold's suggestion to straighten kiln element staples and
shove them into the brick at angles would work without and problem of
cement on elements.

Can you put a piece of plastic over/around the element while you make the
repairs? You may need to remove a element pin or two to allow movement of
the element. Be sure not to move the element much so as not to break it -
very brittle!
Be sure to wet the two brick areas that will be cemented together before
applying cement.

Linda, if the brick piece is small, it is probably better
not to repair it. As long as the element does not bulge out
of the groove, it is okay to remove the broken piece and
continue to fire the kiln. You will not notice any
difference in the way the kiln fires.
