Unless things have changed in the last few years, the only difference
in the GT400 and GT800 is the motor.
I'm surprised to hear that your GT400 motor struggles when centering
only 8 pounds. If that is the case, I guess the 800 would be an
improvement for you. Not faster, but less wear on the motor.
I can't slow down my GT800 no matter how much or how stiff the clay.

the other day i had a problem with the controller/pedal on my gt400 wheel
but a few hours later it started working again as normal. It seems like a
little water got splashed in there when a bucket fell over and when i
cleaned it up it eventually just worked.
But, there were a couple hours where i considering options so i called the
local supplier and they said they could get a gt800 for i think less than
$900, no shipping fee or taxes evidently. The day before i threw about
twice the value of that wheel so it seemed like a good deal to me.
not sure if really need a new wheel at this point but i was just wondering
if anyone knows if there is any majore difference between those two wheels?
i assume one has a little more HP than the other.
I almost never throw more than 8 lbs of firm clay - if i do 9 or 10 it is
only very soft clay for platters, much too soft to throw anything else.
Would the extra HP have any advantage with pots in this range? or is it
mostly for larger stuff? I can tell the motor struggles sometime when
centering clay, and i usually do this pretty fast. Would the gt800 make
things go a little faster?
any comments appreciated.

I've got a GT400- doesn't slow down for me. I don't often throw 8lbs or
more, and if I do, I center a coupla pieces on top of each other.
What can I say..I throw like a girl. I've used that wheel everyday for like
15 years and it's been great! -and, I think back then it was around $400.

It was substantially more expensive when
I bought mine, 5 years ago, but I've thrown
12 lb pieces with some regularity and a few
15's as well -- and it hasn't slowed down.
I suspect it's capacity depends on the softness
of the clay you throw, though, as well as the
amount.
