Try liberally spraying with Liquid Wrench and let it sit for 30 min to
overnight depending on how bad it is. Your local hardware store should
have a can of it in the plumbing section. Try not to get any of it
inside the motor housing: make guards from paper towels before spraying
to catch the drips.

Last year the potter's guild bought a sexy new kiln, and I bought their Sku=
tt KM-1227 for $250, with envirovent. The kiln just needed a little updatin=
g but the envirovent was on the brink of death and rusted out in storage.

I ordered a new motor housing unit, and last night, moved the kiln off the =
stand, pulled out the old one and replaced it. Once the rusty squirrel cage=
was pulled out of the old one, though, the motor started running again. I =
have a third kiln that needs a vent, so I'm inspired to save it.

Skutt had like three old squirrel cage parts left in their storeroom and I =
bought one for $20. My job now is to get the badly rusted, stuck-in-place s=
et-screwed spindle off the shaft so I can put on the new one when it gets h=
ere.

The guy at Skutt suggested cutting the spindle in two places to loosen it, =
and I may go at it tomorrow with a dremel, but it seems like there must be =
some solvent or super-wd40 that would work on the rust in the meantime. I h=
esitate to heat it, as it's connected to the motor... has anybody managed t=
his removal job? I'm all ears for suggestions.

I can build a plenum without much trouble, and will cobble the transition p=
iece between the fan and the dryer vent pipe. Lots of silicone sealer, lol.=
I intend to "Y" this vent into my existing one, and rather than try to pre=
vent backflow into the empty kiln, I'll just run both vents at once when I =
fire.

I'm becoming the queen of cobble... my pug mill is cranking away with its h=
vac duct liner, held together with c-clamps... tightwaddery is the mother o=
f invention.

Thanks in advance for any ideas. I'm still full time processing all the low=
fire info, putting together a powerpoint of inspiration for my students.

Defiantly try some sort of penetrating oil spray like WD40 Liquid wrench is=
my favorite. If that doesn't work try heating it with a torch.

Kelly:
Get yourself a can of something called PB Blaster. Usually found at any
hardware store,
sometimes you can spy a can at Walmart. Yellow label, red letters, lots
of print on the label.
Excellent stuff. Spray it on, give it a few taps with whatever is
handy, and set it aside.
Next day, spray it again, give it a few more taps, and poof! Off it comes.

My brother in law told me that in the Army in 'Nam they used to make up
a batch of what
they (affectionately) called "weasel piss". Said that PB Blaster is
basically the same thing
but that PB smelled better.
Way better than Liquid Wretch too (no, that's not a typo).
Not a salesman or connected to the company, I just love the stuff. It's
bailed me out of a jam
more than a few times... I keep 6 or 7 cans around the place these days.

Best,
Wayne Seidl
