AmericanStyle uses slides of work in many different ways for different
"departments" and "feature stories" We have an editorial calendar that
may help you figure out how your work might "fit" in a future issue.
Most magazines provide editorial calendars to potential advertisers,
contributors, and others interested in what's coming up.
When you send us slides please tell us whether they are for our research
library, a special project, a possible artist profile. Also tell us how
long we may keep your slides... the longer the better. Sometimes it takes
us two years to get around to using your images!
The artist profile section of AmericanStyle requires a photo of the artist
to be published with the work. Don't bother sending slides of work without
this all important image of yourself!
When you send us your slides, be sure to include a list of galleries where
you have a long term relationship. AmericanStyle trys to avoid publishing
the works of artists who are not represented by galleries... galleries pay
the printing bills for AmericanStyle!
Some people think that good work or politics is what you need to get
published... the reality is that neither those elements determine whether
your images are used... good photography is the biggest reason for using
someone's slides... sad but true. That's true with every publication in
the world. Magazines rely on great images to bring their ideas to
readers... My motto is a picture is worth a thousand dollars! (not a
thousand words) A thousand dollars is just about the going rate for a days
work from a good photographer.
Sometimes people are horrified to hear that the quality of the image is
more important than the work it represents, it is a cruel reality of our
visual society.
