I wish you all could see the pots. We decided we would have a show at our
house and focus on some pots we as potters like. We worked with 2 glazes-
Gustin shino and Malcolm Davis carbon trap. We had 3 firings for the show
and each firing the glaze got a bit better. Undrstanding the process a
little more each time. After the show I thought that our little old kiln
was pretty neglected and in pretty sad shape. I talked to Feriz Delkic of
ITC about a process called veneering. Without going into detail it is
basically dipping some 12 inch squares of fiber in ITC 100 and sticking
them on the walls of your kiln. Then spraying the hot face side of the
fiber with ITC 100. I will decribe it in detail if anyone is interested.
The end result of this was the best carbon trapping we have ever had. The
carbon trap has a beautiful gold lustre, with little black cystals that
look like a rock or shell of some kind. We have both kilns firing as I
speak and you guessed it - more carbon trap. I was getting bored with my
gas fired pots, but this has got me excited. Actually the quality of this
glaze is better than I have seen out of our best wood firings. I'm going to
spray the kiln with ITC 296a after the next firing. I hope I'm on to
something here. Hey, Malcolm if you're out there zap me. I love you for
this glaze. Your are entitled to our first born.
Gotta get some sleep. Two kilns to tend to and a room full of two piece
jugs to attend to in the morning. Guess what glaze I'm intending for them.
cheers,
tony
