I thik this is much like the e-mail I got the other day telling me the
USA Commerce Association had awarded me their "Best of " award and
even had a picture of the slab of crystal with my name on it mounted
on a wood base. All I had to do was send them some money to get it.
I'm sure they made one of these things and photoshopped names onto
it. By the way I was awarded the "Best of" award for ..... paint!

I've never heard of these people or the books. Are they for real? Do the
books sell or are they just bought by the people who pay to be in them? Any
advice appreciated.

I would think that to be in a book would tickle the ego, and perhaps put
a picture or two out there in the public view for posterity, but beyond
that - prol'ly a waste of good money which could be spent more
productively elsewhere. Besides that, you would be helping pay for their
production of the book with advertising money (often done) for which you
will see little in return.

My take on such things - BTDT.

John,
This a vanity publishing house.
A simple search in Amazon.com does not get a hit for 'Best of America
anything'.
In fact, if you give them $350.00 you can have your own book published for
$10.00 a book., up to 35 pages.
I find this to more of a benefit than doing the Best of series.
About the only other folks who will view this book are the other artists wh=
o
paid to get into it.

Here is the web site.

working-volume-i/
You can actually view the Vol. 1 of Best of Pottery. It reveals a range of
skill from just awful to wonderful. Money rules, not skill.
Best of, I don't think so, IMHO.

Only bought by people who are in them. Who
would buy a book that everybody could be in?

Like a non-juried show, the result is terribly
uneven in quality, and the best people don't
bother entering. Seeing such a show would be
free, but even then, I'm not likely to make an effort
to see it. A $45 book that's just a non-juried show
on paper? No way. These are vanity publications
who make all their profit on the participants, and
seldom even bother to offer the result for sale
to the public.

Would you pay to show your work in a non-juried
craft fair open to anyone? What if that show had a
visitor's admission fee equal to the cost of entry?
You'd call the promoter a profiteer and stay home,
as would most potential visitors.

I am always embarrassed when I see someone
citing one of these types of books in their CV. It
seems to show either ignorance or desperation
(or both).

Below is a link to the volume in which one of my pieces appears. I think
this was in 2004. Unfortunately they show only a few pieces on this
page, but I remember that several well-known ceramists' works are
included in this volume and the pdf. link is below. I did it once and
there was a jury process involved. I understood that it circulates at
galleries and museums, but I would not do that again, since I did not
have any results from it. Either my work is not good enough or the
publication is a fault.
