I have one, and it's wonderful. It's called a York kickwheel, and the
guy who makes them is a retired aircraft engineer. It's a sweet
little wheel, and really portable. The balance is great, and it'll go
for many minutes on a gentle kick *without load* - centering, though,
is considerably more challenging - the pressure of moving the clay
causes the wheel to slow down very quickly.

I use it to do demos at events.

Don't you go to NCECA? That wheel has been around for decades. It is
called a York wheel I think.
I have thrown on it ages ago. It is cool for places without
electricity and light weight for carrying to demos.

DJ:
Having been around the block a few thousand times
(slowly catching up to the Mayor, I think)
I can tell you...
that ain't no weird wheel.
That's a York.
Still sold in bunches of places. Not expensive.
They are made from concrete, look (to me) like a birdbath
pedestal. But once you get it spinning, it's a thing of beauty
because of all the mass.

Thanks to all and sundry for your replies about the weird
birdbath-looking pedestal aka York kickwheel

one complaint about the York is that it can't center enough clay fast enoug=
h.

I will just say that is user error, not the wheel.

I center large work on it regularly. You can't center on it the same way t=
hat you do on an electric wheel where you rely on motorized torque.

I prefer that wheel to the three other electric wheels I have. It is a ver=
y personal experience throwing on a York. There is nothing between you and=
the clay. And as I said, if you understand centering, it centers fine.

If you center by brute force and speed, well, maybe you might get one and l=
earn to center with technique instead of muscle.

It also serves as an excellent spray booth base, trimming wheel, sculpture =
base, and small person's wheel.

Also, I leave mine outdoors all year with no deterioration or rust or wear.=
Mr. York tested his outside in Wisconsin to make this be true. The beari=
ngs inside are completely sealed and the wheel stays exactly as is with no =
maintenance.

It is made of concrete and if you hit it with a hammer, you might chip it.

Another plus, unlike electric wheels, during a hurricane, you can still th=
row!

Every wheel has its own learning curve.

Are the York wheels still available? I looked on Axners website and
they do not list the York kick wheel in their "wheel" section nor the
"kick wheel" section.
