We ( Sacramento) just had a similar show of Contemporary Japanese
Ceramics by women artists--called "SOARING VOICES" . The best pots
I've seen in many years, or maybe since the great Korean Contemporary
Ceramics in SF a couple of years ago. At first I thought it had to be
the same show! But no--altho there were many sculptural pieces ,
there were definite 'vessels' ( i.e. some 24" porcelain plates
decorated with layers and layers of handmade flowers (that was one)
and geometrical shapes (two of these) and then heaven only knows how
many layers of glazes so that the color ranged from pale pale blue to
an almost medium blue--INCREDIBLE! ( yeah, I shouted. I got all
excited)...Plus a lot of wood fired stuff and other fine porcelain
used in remarkable ways...If this show ( "SOARING VOICES") comes
anywhere near ya, go see it. IT'll knock your socks off, man or
woman. Such beautiful pottery. What great strong women!

Hi All,
Just back from an outstanding teacher workshop/show at the Smith
College
Museum of Art in Northampton, Ma. TOUCH FIRE- Contemporary Japanese
Ceramics by Women Artists- composed of 90 sculptures by 21 contemporary
Japanese women- the show explores the emergence of women artists onto
the scene since the 50's - most coming from a collegiate background as
opossed to the traditional apprentice system/route. There are some nice
vessell forms to be found- but surface and sculpture is where its at
with this
show- a must see if you are able to get to it.
Runs through Feb. 28- with opportunities for artist and specialist
talks as well-
Also making the show such a stunner is the use of screen backdrops
throughout created Maio Motoko-
Sheer beauty and elagence- with some challange to tradition
thrown in
for good measure.
