John & Bill,
The vermiculite available on the market can contain very small amounts =3D
of asbestos (trace amounts). However, before 1990, a more important =3D
proportion could be present, particularly in vermiculite obtained of =3D
mica coming from the mine of Libby. More specifically, the one coming =3D
from mineral extracted from the mine from Libby, Montana in the United =3D
States, during the years 1920 to 1990. Let us precise that vermiculite =3D
is obtained by the expansion of mica heated to more yhan 350=3DB0 C.=3D20
Consequently, there exists a possibility that certain vermiculite =3D
insulators marketed during this period in Canada, amongst other things =3D
under the name of Zonolite=3DAE Attic Insulation, and perhaps under other =
=3D
names, contain asbestos. Vermiculite products coming from this mine have =
=3D
not been very much used since the middle of 1980s and should not be =3D
found any more on the Canadian market since the last ten years.
Vermiculite produced before 1990 does not contain necessarily asbestos. =3D
These products can be dangerous if they are moved during l' maintenance, =
=3D
restoration or demolition. However, there is no health hazard if it is =3D
sealed in wall insularing panels or in floors, isolated in an attic or =3D
absent from ambient air.=3D20
Vermiculite is used in several sectors economic activities since more =3D
than 80 years. It is mainly used in construction, agriculture, =3D
horticulture and in several industrial fields. It is used as an =3D
insulating material and has capacity to absorb liquids, including water =
=3D
and oil
