I use them at Northern Clay Center. Lots of use/abuse there. They
seem to hold up well.

Hi All,

I have just bought a corelite shelf to test in my kiln. I think it goes =
=3D
up to cone 11,and I wonder if anyone has any experience, good or bad, =3D
with these shelves. =3D20

Thanks,

Rikki

Treat them just like any other cordierite/high alumina shelf.
Requires kiln wash.
Easily takes ^10/11 reduction firing.
Paul Geil now uses them for his shelf kits for the Geil kilns.
He was burned with a whole bunch of Chinese made nitride bonded shelves a
few years ago.
His customers were having too many cracks/breaks, he gave up on them.

I got one to test, as well. I love how light it is. It's only been a
year, but it seems just fine. No problems.

Thanks Karin,

One more question, please. Do you use kiln wash on your shelves?
I don't use anything on my advancers except alumina hydrate, but will if I
need to.

Thanks,

Rikki

Hi Barb,
I'm using them in a Skutt 1227PK with great results. I have a handful of th=
e
full round 1" thick shelves specifically for my large diameter platters, an=
d
10 of the 5/8" thick half shelves for other things. I have had no warping,
breakage or any other problems with them (aside from price :O). I'd love to
buy a few more of the full rounds this year - they are so light compared to
1" cordrite shelves.

Hi have any of you had experience with the Corelite kiln shelves? These are
the ones that are hollow inside. Would you recommend them? Do they warp a=

s
easily as the regular ones. And break more often? I am using 26=3DB2 shel=
ves
and fire to cone 6

Thanks, Barb

Barb,
I tested a couple 12 x 24 Corelite shelves, ^10 reduction firings for a yea=
=3D
r
before writing about them in Mel's book. I kiln washed one side with a mix
of alumina/kaolin, did not flip them and found no warpage. Still using them
in ^6 reduction firings a few years later, still no warpage.
They should perform very well for you.

FYI - Do not recommend for raku firing. Test of a 15" full shelf in raku
firing - cracked in 2nd firing, broke in 3rd.

Hi Barb,

I've been using them for about a year and I totally love them. They =3D20
are very light and do not warp. They also seem to be very sturdy, due =3D20=
=3D

to the honeycomb structure.

One caveat: If you get a lot of dripping glaze, like from student =3D20
work, I'd think carefully about it--each side of the shelf is much =3D20
thinner than a normal shelf, and a really big chipping job could go =3D20
through it.

Only limited experience, but so far very good --
no warping, and it's much easier to use than a
regular shelf.
