As I'm reading these notes on filling cracks and whether or not it's
ethical, I'm thinking of the Asian use of gold to fill cracks. What a
different artistic sensibility- it seems as if the "character" aspect of
the crack is emphasized and valued as opposed to seen as a flaw. I once
read description of the differences between Eastern and Western artistic
perception. In the west, the symetrical and perfect is valued. In the
East, perfection is hinted at by the use of the asymetrical. Western
artistic sensibility are based on the body, and Eastern on nature. What
do you think? Does this cast any light on our attitudes about cracks?

I wonder about filling cracks whenever I take a Raku out of the reduction
and find a small crack. Is this pot now worthless??Should I fill the crack and
"fix" it? Is that a terrible thing to do on a decorative pot? A teacher of
mine would fill the cracks on his sculptural pots. He is the one I think
about whenever I'm wondering about this. But just because he did it or does it
, is it the thing to do? MMMMMMM .His name is Soldner. What do you all
think?? Michelle - waiting for the insanity to be over....................
