Lili,

You are going to get some wise, informed, educated, experienced answers
on this. I have painted, and still do - but for me - I subscribe to the
"Slap Paint" method - and when done - If I like it I hang it. If I
don't, the canvas gets scraped for reuse or scrapped as the case may be.

There's a book called Making Color Sing, Practical Lessons in Color
and Design by Jeanne Dobie, AWS. ISBN 082302993X. It is by a
watercolorist but she talks about creating a personal palette, mixing
powerful color etc.

Unnecessary work? Like throwing on a treadle wheel or firing with wood kiln=
, the tools and process give the work its identity. I am sure Albers knew w=

I saw some Albers paintings up close. He did not use a brush, always using =
the palette knife.
Seems like a lot of unnecessary work to me.

I just picked up a book at our local library book sale that I found very
interesting. It is "Color Harmony 2" by Bride M. Whelan. It is described as
a Guide to Creative Color Combinations. It shows "12 basic hues with 94
tints and shades giving 1400 color combinations". The books shows color
combinations for many varied effects and moods, etc.

I just did a search on Addall books and there are a number of copies
available for low prices.

I was trying to find out if there was a "Color Harmony 1", and apparently
there isn't. I don't quite understand the deal on that.

On the inside front all the publishers are listed (all published in 1994)
but there was no ISBN number. Published Rockport Publishers, Rockport,
Mass.

I recommend any book by Leatrice Eiseman, such as ...

Color: Messages & Meanings
http://www.colorexpert.com/colormessages_meaning.html

Pantone Guide to Communicating with Color
http://www.colorexpert.com/guide.html

These books are written for graphic designers, but I bet painters would l=
=3D
ike them too. Both=3D20
are available at Amazon.=3D20

The colour wheels and charts in books can teach a great deal, but
perhaps you could suggest to your friend that he spend some time at a
good museum.

Really look at the Monets, Renoirs, Cezannes, Dufys... and see what
they can teach. So much to learn...
