=3DA0=3DA0=3DA0 Hello ClayArters,,=3D0A=3DA0=3DA0 I have 2 Clay Bosses, a S=
himpo, and a=3D
n old Thomas Stuart (the kick-electric kind), and the last one I bought was=
=3D
a Clay Boss. They have come up with a new splash pan, it is still a little=

tricky to put on, but not a bother, and is much more sturdy than the first=
=3D
one I got. They have them for sale for the old ones too. You can lean on t=

So does my Woodley. And my Korean kickwheel. And my Shimpo Gold.

You can see my Korean wheel here, with its new plate on the axle:

The cone shimpos freewheel when they are off and the foot pedal is
pushed all the way down. Do the new shimpos do this? Do any of tthe
other electrics do this?

Mine is a Clay Boss.=3DA0 Have used it constantly for 2-3 years.=3DA0 No pr=

It's reversable.=3DA0 Easy to clean.
Of course, by this tiime -- anything -- to do with clay that works as it's =

spozed to work, i'd brag on to the hilt.

Consider that if a wheel fits (the most important factor), and is rated =3D
(a
point for a whole discussion) for 50 lbs. vs. a wheel that is rated for =3D
100
lbs. that the wheel rated for 100 lbs will generally have bigger =3D
bearings,
motor, wheelhead (not always) and be built heavier. In my opinion =3D
(always
suspect) the heavier components insure a longer life for average use.

I have 6 wheels, ranging from my first, a bailey ST-50 that was rated =3D
for
fifty pounds to the Brent "C" that I use every day, with a second Brent =3D
"C"
that I trim on. My old wheel and two other bailey Pro-XL wheels are used
several days a week by my apprentice and students. I have a Shimpo =3D
portable
that I take to schools and shows for demos. I really doubt that any of =3D
these
will need replaced within my life expectancy since they are each being =3D
used
in the application they were designed for.

The little Shimpo is great for portability - I do wish it had a foot
controller. The Bailey's are a great value for students/classroom - even =
=3D
the
ST-50 is pretty bullet proof but lightly powered. My Brent wheels are =3D
just
built like battle ships - with price tags to match, but I know they are
going to work when I roll up to them. I often spend in excess of 5 hours =
=3D
a
day at this wheel, it is important that it fits well and runs perfect, =3D
on
the first pot and the last.

If you are going to set up a home studio, or small startup studio you =3D
are
trying to see where you might save a few dollars. You might think that
buying a cheaper wheel is one place where one might be able do this but =3D
I
would content that this very important tool is the place where you don't
want to go "cheap". My apprentice is beginning to assemble a studio and =3D
we
have been looking at costs. Figure around $5000 by the time you get a =3D
wheel,
kiln, extruder, slab roller, tools, glaze supplies and clay. Considering =
=3D
the
bottom line, skimping $100 on the cost difference between a "beginner" =3D
wheel
and a "Pro" wheel seems pretty minor savings.

Just my random thoughts,
