Last firing in our ^10 gas kiln I put two of the larkin shelves in to
see how they faired. no kiln wash, runny looking pots with amber
celedon on them. sure enough the badly glazed pots had runs... but
unlike our corderite shelves with kiln wash, the pots came right off
with no trouble. the glaze foamed a bit as vince described in his
soda firings. I think this might be why they released so well.
the amazing part: when I used the SiC rub brick to knock don the
glaze runs on the nitride bonded shelves, all it took was a few light
strokes and EVERYTHING was off the shelf, save a minor discoloration
that you wouldn't have noticed if you weren't looking for it. I win.
no more fussing with the angle grinder for me.
this firing we filled the kiln exclusively with the nitride bonded
shelves. God help us if they all crack in half! still waiting for
some work to go in for a monday firing, and will know how things went
on wednesday when we unstack.

p.s. despite that we cooked all of the shelves at about 2000F before
as instructed by larkin before using, they still stank a little of
something sulfury or the like. kind of an unpleasant odor that I
can't really place. made it less fun to stack the kiln, but that was
offset by the sight of all of these new shelves in there stacked to
the top of the arch almost. Haven't been able to do that in a while
since our corderite shelves have been getting depleted over time.
