reglaze or remake?

Just opened the glaze kiln and two commissioned pieces (both with the
same glaze) didn't come out well. I'm pretty sure the glaze was not
thick enough.

They are both standard shapes - a bowl and a platter - but post-dated
on the bottom for a wedding gift (with the date of the wedding).

The pieces are not necessarily trashed - the glaze boo boo is kind of
interesting. Just not what the customer ordered. I have never
reglazed anything (generally not worth it) but have read the archives,
so I know conceptually what to do. Given all of this, I ask for the
wisdom of this group...reglaze or remake?

Thanks!

Ali,I =3DA0hope you build enough padding into your custom pricing to cover =

is sort of thing. I suppose that is an off topic comment but perhaps releva=

nt. I jack the price by 100% for that kind of work especially with the date=

thing.I fire only about 8 times a year so remaking of re-glazing is diffic=
=3D
ult if time is an issue. My concern about re-glazing would be crystobalite.=
=3D
Unless your clay is really low quartz you run the risk of crystobalite for=

ming to the point that dunting (cracking during cooling) can happen. Crysto=

balite has a really high coefficient of expansion and doen't handle cooling=

Do both.
Re-glaze adding a gum binder to the liquid glaze to have it adhere to the
already fired glaze.
Also remake the pots in case this doesn't work.

Ali,

I would do both to cover my butt. I don't know what kind of time frame you
have but make it again and reglaze the other two pieces. I reglazing
things frequently with great success, not always though, hence the remake a=
s
well. One thing about reglazing and refiring, my experience is that the
glaze changes during the refiring and often is more interesting but very
different from what you started with so that might not work for this specia=
l
order. I generally make several pieces of a special order to hopefully get
one that works. People rarely pay enough for this type of work or we don't
charge enough:).

Good luck.
