my bad kiln programming

Jim opened the kiln. I haven't seen the work. No meltdown. No glaze
puddles. And he used low-fire glazes with crystals in them so there
should have been puddles. He described the work as matt and
interesting. He said if you look at the crystals from an angle, the
melted crystals have some gloss. The really weird part is some of the
work has small gas bubbles. Um... I thought the point of holding for
30 minutes was to allow any gas in the glaze to escape and the
resulting bubble to return to flat.

So... this morning, Jim programmed the kiln. This time, 0.20 hold NOT
30.00.

Oh how I know the sinking feeling in your stomach when you realize that you
scheduled it for 30 hours instead of 30 minutes......

I believe the reason we (women) do this wrong is because of our beloved
microwave ovens...... I found out the hard way too, that the kiln keypad
is NOT the same as the microwave.

My pieces did come out, a little smaller than usual and the glaze a bit on
the matte side rather than glossy, but all the pieces were sold (they were
all candle holders) and no one knew my mistake - one that I will never
make again!!

HI Bunny,
Sooo glad that that was not worse than it was. There are just two groups of
potters when it comes to this sort of thing - those who have done it and
those who will...... Just thank goodness that your turn at bat is over =
.

Best Wishes,

Hi Deborah,

Glad to hear the news was not all bad!

Just a guess here, but with the very long soak perhaps the thermocoupl=
e
allowed the kiln to slightly exceed the target cone and cause bubbles.
Depending on the glazes involved this could be a serious to minor problem.
Did you have a target cone in the kiln, and if so how did it read?

I have always had issues with the variant of floating blue I use when the
thermocouple is beginning to go bad. It will bubble at anything over cone 6
and much prefers cone 5. A long soak at temp only makes it worse. Waterfall
Brown is another glaze that tends to be fussy about exceeding temp.

Other glazes I have used are very tolerant of these variations. But they ar=
e
the ones that are just not as exciting as the others. Sometimes I push the
line and win, sometimes I lose.

When you get a chance to see the pieces yourself, I'd be curious to know
just which ones bubbled - just to add to our information base.

Thanks,

Bunny
Or an EFTPOS machine.
Entering 35 on our new machine gave us 35 cents.
Correctly entering 3500 would've given us $35.
Fortunately the customer was a local,
balance easily recouped.
